My company is re-locating to Charlotte - NC from Detroit - MI.

Wanted to know
1> Cost of living
2> Weather
3> Schools
4> Best place to stay where indian community is around

Charlotte is a nice city, booming currently. Cost of living is moderate i would say, not very cheap but not pricey either.

Weather is excellent!!! Dont get severe winters. Summer is Florida like. Charlotte doesnt get affected by the hurricanes that affect the coastal NC cities either. All in all, you will love the weather unless you are used to CA or FL kind of weather, in which case you may see this as a big deal.

Schools are pretty good. Have several private schools as well. You can check on ratings I am not quite sure where it falls in the national spectrum.

Your best bet is the South side of charlotte which has a sizeable indian population. North (near UNCC) is good too but not as developing as the South.

Charlotte is a nice city to live to whatever have observed. There are tons of desis working for all those financial companies like BofA, Vanguard Group, First Union/Wachovia and so on. In the early 2000s, I was told that for the amount of desis living there, there was not much of ethnic stuff to do then, things might have changed now i would think.

Btw, there used to be an indian restaurant in south charlotte called Jaipur??, good lunch buffet there, is it still around?.

Charlotte is one of the fast growing city, and it is an extension of wall street type jobs. So, if you are into Financial services then Charlotte is the best.

I am living in Charlotte for the last two years, cost of living average(I guess it will be equal to Detriot area), schools ratings are also average. Weather is good,..mild winter, no snow...

Recently more Indians are moving to this area. U can live in South or North of Charlotte depending on your work location , both these places have sizeable indian population.

1. Not that cheap. But definetly housing is affordable. Auto Insurance is not that expensive as compared to NE states.Not sure about Detroit.
2. Excellent weather.You get all the 4 seasons. But winter does not get that cold. Summer may be slightly high on the warmer side.
I have seen it rains almost every week there except for the month of july.
Heard there is water usage restricition in the Charlotte metro area
3. Fairly decent schools. Check for the lottery system as you may get a chance to send the kid toa good school in another schools district to which you may not belong to. Also check for the magnet schools.
4. Go south young man. Close to Ballantyne area would be really good.Also depends on where your work place would be.
485 is packed in the morning and evening.Same with 77.
This will help you to get an idea where your home can be.Traffic is very bad.

I finally zeroed in on Vinoy at Innovation Park (University Area).
Tons of desis :) Apartments are new ( 5 years old)
Hope this helps someone who is new to Charlotte, like me.
