Hi,
Kids speak and understand Hindi, but not Telugu.
Wanted to know how would life in Hyderabad be for a non-Telugu.
Thanks,

No issues at all. You will be able to blend well.
Almost all hyderabadis speak Deccani (cocktail of hindi/urdu) with a dose of telugu and gibbrish. 40-50% of Hyderabadis speak non-telugu (Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati, etc) at home.

Hyderabad is a very easy city for most people moving in from India. 50% of Hyd are muslims who can speak Urdu. Most Telugu people will cooperate if you are polite in Hindi/Urdu. TV channels are featuring 8 languages in most cases.
So your Auto driver, barber, shop keeper, Doctor, police constable kind of services can easily be obtained in Hindi/Urdu.
But as in any city, pick up the local lingo as soon as you can. It will invariably help your quality of life.

It helps to know and learn local language wherever one lives - it enhances the quality of life. Hyd has two primary local languages - Telugu and Mulki Hyderbadi Hindi (which is Bindaas Hindi with few rules, has a charm of its own and peculiar words like Nakko, Kaiku ...). Urdu is also spoken.
I grew up in Hyd (went to school there for about 10 years). We spoke Tamil at home. And I learnt Khadi Boli Hindi at school, and Mulki Hyderbadi Hindi and Telugu on the street. Certain sections of the population will speak Telugu only, whereas certain sections will speak Mulki Hyderbadi Hindi only - however many can understand the other language i.e. the one they dont speak.
My dad came to Hyd with prior knowledge of Hindi and little knowledge of Telugu. With my mom, it was the other way round. My mom managed with Telugu and improved her Hindi very little. Likewise my dad managed with Hindi and improved his Telugu very little beyond jokes like "Ayidu paisaluku istava/ostava". The kids picked up both languages.
Even Telugu has Andhra, Telangana and Rayalaseema versions and the Telugu one learns will depend on the company one keeps. Even within Andhra, the Telugu spoken by Krishna delta people will be different from that spoken by Godavari delta people.

My kids know english (no hindi). We know hindi. We moved to HYD in June. Kids have adjusted very well in school and outside as well.
We face little issues in talking to maid (generally telugu speaking), but that no big deal.
You will enjoy. Good luck.

If I can manage in Hyd, anyone can. I dont know Telugu & Hindhi as well. Not natural at language, as too shy a character. Even my family laughs & laughs at my language (forget them, they laugh at my English as well). I have managed more than 10 yrs.
It just happens.
