Free to Air Receivers for Dish

Post by dhindia »

Some of my friends use this and watch Dish network free. Is this a legal way? From what i have read on the web, it implies that if a signal is available it is ok to receive it. The receiver costs $170 and i am thinking about buying this.

Free to air channels are obviously free to watch, but there are few paid encrypted channels which mite be illegal. Having said that, your friends mite be getting these channels on the test frequencies [which periodically changes] so they are just enjoying the temporary free to air channel. HTH

actually they have been watching all dish channels free for last 2 years now. dish tries to encrypt it and change the lock codes but the receiver is smart enought to crack that

The last tv dishes I knew of were the ones that would receive the signal and the digibox+card combination would actually decrypt the signal, technology is growing too fast, need a lotta catch-up or ketchup ....O god am getting old

FTA recievers are legal but modifying them to recieve signals from dish network is not legal. See link below. I am not sure what Dish has been doing on their part lately to protect against this but it looks like unless they do something on their part there is really no way to track down who is recieving an illegal signal.

I have a dish installed and currently do no subscribe to any channels since I switched over to cable.

The dish was for Indian programming only- Zee, Sony and the other regular fare.

Someone I know bought a receiver SonicView 1000 but since they did not have a dish installed, they gave me this receiver. I downloaded the files that the forums recommend, but did not get a signal. I think it has to do with choosing the right satellite and transponder frequency. Does anyone know which satellite transmits Indian programming in North America and at what transponder frequencies? Also, what I am doing wrong that keeps me from receiving the signal?
