Transition from INC to USC while working in India - how to manage

Post by nand »

I am negotiating on a job offer in India. I am currently Indian Citizen but applied for USC in January 07 in san jose, which is the slowest possible center.

If I join this job in august and dont and say I get my USC in november, I can come back to san jose for the oath and stuff. However, at that point I will no longer be eilgible to work in India until I get my PIO/OCI, which takes 2 or 3 months. Sitting out for 2-3 months may not sit well with my future employer (a big US/bay area MNC).

What options do I have in the interim so that I can get Indian work authorization immediately without any delay? Have some people managed to do this. Of course the safest option is to wait, but opportunities will not come by every day. Spouse will remain in US till the end of the process/USC passport etc. comes in hand.

Your opinions and suggestions are appreciated

After you get oath, you can apply/get your passport in few days, if you show your travel plan.

For PIO, if you pay $200 more, you can get it in 1 week, otherwise 4 weeks for regular PIO. You could work longer in PIO and apply OCI in India by paying just $25 more.

ggrajan - thanks for the info. Further questions:

1. how soon can you get the US passport after the oath, given the current mess with the US government directive. If I can get it in a week by paying more that will be best.

2. Do I have to wait for the US passport before applying for PIO or parallelize it a bit.

The reason I am asking - the job I am going for is actually a local india position and they will not make any additional accomodations for a US returnee - they may wait for a couple of weeks at most. It is not in IT.

Nand,

Chk this post out for info on how fast one can get a US passport.

I believe one has an option to get a work visa apart from OCI/PIO to work in India.

Good luck

Sorry, no clue. The staff of the CGSF seemed "informal and helpful" in an "Indian" sort of way, you may want to check w/ them.

Hi,

Once you find out your oath ceremony date, you can get an appointment at one of the passport agencies at http://travel.state.gov/passport/about/agencies/agencies_913.html

This option is only if you are traveling outside USA in 2 weeks. If you get at appointment in the morning, you can get the passport by the end of the day or max the next day.

With the passport, you can walk in to Indian Embassy and get the employment visa in a day. You can apply for OCI after you R2I. It should take you around 2 months in India.

Thanks,

GP

PIO can not be applied in parallel as the US passport number is required.
I did not know that the Indian Embassy could be so efficient as to issue a WORK visa in a day.
