Housing : Where to stay? How close to school / work?... Please advise

Post by ujwala »

Hello all,
Would love to throw some questions at you regarding our move to Bangalore

Here they are:
We have been on and off in Bangalore for the last year and are moving lock, stock and barrel by the end of August from Portland, Oregon.
My son will be 5 in October and that means I have the biggest responsibility of finding schooling and permanent housing. My husband is working somewhere in JayaNagar and we currently have an rental in Richmond Town.
I would like to have my son join one of the International Schools (TISB or Indus) and now here are my questions...

1. What's a good place to stay if my son needs to go to TISB and my husband to Jayanagar...without loosing all our time in commuting. I have figured out that "only 10 minutes" can take as long as an hour (depending on the traffic).

2. Any input on schools..which are better than others....I have shorlisted TISB and Indus only because I have visited those schools on my last visit and liked them both for different reasons.

Thank you all in advance,...

I guess the best bet is the Outer Ring road/Sarjapur road intersection. getting to Jayanagr would take 1 hour but the kids school will be driving distance. I think Koramangala should work as well though it might be bit pricy

Thanks for the reply...As I understand it the outer ring road is quite a large area! Any nice housing that you could recommend?? Koramanagla is very crowded and yes highly overpriced. We woudl probbaly rent to begin with.

I don't know where Indus is. so can't answer your original question.

sftrade clearly mentioned ORR/Sarjapur intersection, so he's not referring to the entire ORR which, as you rightly said, is very large area. It is easily accessible from parts of Jayanagar. Jayanagar is huge too. So, if you could tell which block in Jayanagar, I can help better.

Look at location-map of any of the ORR/Sarjapur road properties on this website.

Hello and thanks much for the email..
My husband works in Jayanagar 3rd block and Indus seems a little out of the way (it is close to TISB). I am considering Vibgyor or Freedom International as they have got good reviews and more importantly they take mid-term admissions. Any suggestions on the schools will also be welcome.
I'd hate for my son to commute more than 20-30 minutes. My husband and I cna travel a little longer! Once we decide on teh school then we can look for areas to live....We currently have a rental in Richmond Town and I am paying a horrific price for it while we are in the states! I think Bangalore is due for a real-estate price correction.

Let me know your thoughts/advise./suggestions..

i think rentals around ORR/sarjapur road are in the 15-20k vicinity. look up craigslist and haggle. I think the sobha complex on ORR is a concrete jungle. I'd rather stay on the sarjapur rd within 1km from ORR) on the complexes know as springfields or others. from what i can see on the maps both the schools are on sarjapur road.

dosalvr can comment more. he relocated to somewhere closeby

I agree that Koramangala would be a good location to rent. HSR lyt to Jayanagar (for Husband) and Sarjapur (for the kid) would be another option.

Shobha Suncity, Harmony and a host of other concrete jungles apts are available for renting in Belandur(?) on ORR.

Independent homes and row homes on Sarjapur road - ~2000 sq ft would cost around 40k per month - less expensive for similar properties in Koramangala.

Check out Sulekha.com, expatriots.com, admag and freeads for leads.

BTW, IMO, it is a renter's mkt in these area of BLR (except Koramangala and probably some parts of HSR)

Good luck

I understand that TISB and Indus are in or near Sarjapur village and that the road is long/winding and a "kaccha" road. A car ride to the school would be pretty uncomfortable, and that one would definitely want to consider the school bus for their kid's daily commute.

My impression of VIBGYOR is mixed bag at this time. Freedom Intl may not be for someone who has/is seriously considering TISB/INDUS etc.

Pls post regarding schools in the BLR Schools MT - you might get more responses and views of other members...
