Let's have a thread to share all resources and discussions related to Vedas. The term Vedas is being used here as a general term for all Hindu sacred scriptures.
Following the first post giving Wiki links to major Hindu scriptures, the next few posts will contain a series of Youtube/Google videos giving a glimpse of some aspects of ancient Vedic tradition of India.
Irrespective of our current beliefs, I think, every Indian or person of Indian origin should know the basics of Vedas. They are the foundation of 'Indian culture' as we know today. Feel free to post links (preferably in English or Sanskrit), articles, videos, audio and your own original writing to educate others.

Narayana Sooktam -- Hymn to Lord Narayana
Narayana, is the vedantic conception for the Eternal (ayana) Purusha(Nara), the Supreme divinity. This marvelous hymn extols Narayana as`all that is manifest and unmanifest. It beautifully and symbolically describes the soul of man (atman) as the spark of the Supreme.
The chanters of this wonderful hymn are the famed Challakere Brothers. I have used the breathtaking Krsna Art (http://www.krsna-art.com/) imagery of the ISKCON movement, to create this video slideshow. I invite you to watch this video.

Durga Sooktam -- Hymn to Mother Durga
In Hindu mythology, Mother Durga is the destroyer of evil. A warrior goddess astride a lion or tiger, with many weapons in her hands (symbolising Her many powers), she plunges forth to kill and destroy the Evil to protect and cleanse the universe as the occasion arises. This hymn is an invocation to Mother Durga for Her protection and Grace.

Gayatri Mantra
The Gayatri Mantra is a highly revered mantra in Hinduism, second only to the mantra Om. It consists of the prefix :o? bhur bhuva? sva? ? ???????????, a formula taken from the Yajurveda, and the verse 3.62.10 of the Rigveda (which is an example of the Gayatri mantra). Since all the other three Vedas contain much material rearranged from the Rig Veda, the Gayatri mantra is found in all the four Vedas. The deva invoked in this mantra is Savitr, and hence the mantra is also called Savitri.
By many Hindus, the Gayatri is seen as a Divine awakening of the mind and soul, and within it a way to reach the most Supreme form of existence, and the way to Union with Brahman. Understanding, and purely loving the essence of the Gayatri Mantra is seen by many to be one, if not the most powerful ways to attain God.

Rituals/Symbolism:
Chakras with hand gestures:
Film "Chakra" symbolically tells the story of creation. This story is in Vedas - ancient Indian sacred manuscripts. These are perhaps the most ancient ones in the world. The word "chakra", in Sanskrit, means "wheel" and is used in such concepts as "wheel of knowledge", "wheel of wisdom", "wheel of life". The symbol of the wheel of life denotes the idea of perpetual evolutionary (spiral) movement of life with return to initial state. The act of creation can be imagined as an act of "setting the wheel in motion" by spiritual power of God. In the film, you can see symbols of four metaphysic elements - air, water, fire and earth - everything have been created from them. Visualisation of ancient manuscript is combined with abhinaya - language of gestures used in Indian classical dance.

Why Spiritual Knowledge Is Kept Secret (qualification related discourse)
From the works of Enlightened Master Paramahamsa Nithyananda. Here Nithyananda explains that spiritual knowledge is not for everyone. It can be harmful to a person who receives it if he is not spiritually mature. If you tell a criminal that he is God, he will misuse this knowledge to justify his immoral actions. Krishna declares that He is God. This is a secret because it cannot be delivered to a person who is not yet mature. God cannot be given as instant coffee. You can't just have God instantly. A maturation process is necessary. Actually the more you hurry this process, the greater the delay. The very hurrying will postpone the experience. It will not let you relax. A vast number of statements and materials presented in the ancient Vedic literatures can be shown to agree with modern scientific findings ... all » and they also reveal a highly developed scientific content in these literatures. The great cultural wealth of this knowledge is highly relevant in the modern world. Techniques used to show this agreement include: - Marine Archaeology of underwater sites (such as Dvaraka) - Satellite imagery of the Indus-Sarasvata River system - Carbon and Thermoluminiscence Dating of archaeological artifacts - Scientific Verification of Scriptural statements - Linguistic analysis of scripts found on archaeological artifacts - A Study of cultural continuity in all these categories.

Sanskrit Tradition in 'Thinking Allowed'
Prof. Dean Brown points out that most European languages can be traced back to a root language that is also related to Sanskrit - the sacred language of the ancient Vedic religions of India. Many English words actually have Sanskrit origins. Similarly, many Vedic religious concepts can also be found in Western culture. He discusses the fundamental idea of the Upanishads - that the essence of each individual, the atman, is identical to the whole universe, the principle of brahman. In this sense, the polytheistic traditions of India can be said to be monistic at their very core.

Swami Vivekananda Series (Original audio from 19th century)::emrose:
Vivekananda explains the gist of Hinduism by quoting a sloka from "Baghavad Gita". In fact that also explains the concept of Universal acceptance of all religion.
From an audio release, about the Life and Works of Swami Vivekananda. Though it is not the actual voice of Vivekananda, we can feel the power of his thoughts on Hinduism, and his respect for other religions.

Why we Disagree?
Vivekananda highlights the ignorance of those, who claim their religion as the BEST. It should always be 'ONE OF THE BEST' instead.
The one who finds fault with other religion, is ignorant of not only that religion, but his own. Because there are sufficient proofs in all religions from which people have reached the zenith in all fields, whether it is spirituality or social life or any field for that matter.
If there are any issues it should be with the people who follow it with misconceptions and not with the religion itself.
So my friends, stop abusing other religions, and try to follow your religion with faith, no matter whether it is your original or converted religion.

tejasvee,
That was a wonderful articulation. Everybody has honestly contributed and sure Everything served a purpose.
Last century perfected capitalism, democracy and brought in some stability in the world towards its end.
I know for fact that this century is about liberation and freedom...
Its time we have to re-interpret and write new upanishads with the perspective of neuro science and physical science.. Science and vedas needs to merge. Can you start on that small project, needless to say the members of this forum (like RRK, Desis, Bobus, KRV, NEESHA, MB, DJ, DL, purujit, etc, etc) will definitely provide some constructive critical analysis and contribution to some chapter.
Whatever that comes closer will be voted in as the page...
Sure Neesha will take some part and i'll be your resource/lieutinant to make you all successfull. We can have this forum have a seperate diedicated page link to contaiin the analysis.
All you have to say is yes, the rest is the duty of the almighty to take care... Atleast lie that you'll do it thats enough...
Dont our children deserve a better (relatively) interpretaion of the best.

I'm glad you are coming around. Or is it me?!. Seriously, I have pretty much gotten down the fence. I'm nearing the last few rungs of the ladder - going down
[quote]Can you start on that small project, needless to say the members of this forum (like RRK, Desis, Bobus, KRV, NEESHA, MB, DJ, DL, purujit, etc, etc) will definitely provide some constructive critical analysis and contribution to some chapter.

I'd imagine this and other "belief" threads have given enough fodder for theologists to earn his/her 2nd Phd and/or the old-school gurus to become new-age gurus and become rich and famous.
I hope that we all will get a mention in the preface or the foot note when that happens! And hopefully a cheque will follow too:p

True story! A buddy cum ex-colleague of mine *has* become a new age guru. Last when I met him, near abouts Mysore, he had a pretty good following. An ashram is being built. He has plenty of speaking engagements.
He (PBUH) has offered me life long free room and board in his ashram if I should ever need it...Don't know if I should praise or curse him for the offer... I sure hope to god that I don't ever need it. Amen!
