It's so unfortunate that Indian Govt needed this BBC report to take action against wide spread killing of girl child, particularly among some specific communities, in specific states in India.
The gynecologist (in the BBC report) is just a small pawn in this whole epidemic.
It?s a shame that even prosperous and people with university degrees are doing it, mainly for financial benefit and justifying this barbaric behavior in the name of ?tradition?. Yet they claim to be civilized!

Our leaders and policy makers need to take much more proactive approach and stop this social evil.

This killing of girl child is not only related to the heinous dowry system but also social status of the women in that country and huge effort to protect and associated "trouble" to bring up a girl child there.

Jay, you should dedicate a thread dedicated to show the ills of India. Most of the members of this forum would disapprove of the practices mentioned in the news you posted above. I bet anyone would argue in this thread that there is nothing wrong in killing a child. So, this thread serves informational value. There are some other similar threads created by you. You can consolidate multiple news stories that you posted around the theme of "evils of India" in one thread.

Really? It’s beyond my wildest imagination how any civilized and sane person can actively support (and sometimes practice too) killing girl child!!!!
Yes, and there will be more such threads in this forum, by me and by others. These issues are more important than huge discussions on selecting LCD-Plasma TV, or barbecue facility available in India etc. Those may be very important for some people, but according to me, such issues of national importance is much, much more important.
We need long and proper discussion on such grave issues and spread awarness. This is one of the best forums to do just that. .

The gynaecologist (Mangala Telang) in the BBC report gone "missing" (some money to police and politicians).

Severe punishment should be given to such doctors and people asking them to do such tests and subsequent killing the female fetus.

Why should govt restrain a doctor from performing an ultrasound to reveal the ID of the child? Why such a law?

Because of widespread misuse of the technique in killing girl child. Now India is facing a real social crisis (no more at the level of problem). Boy-Girl ratio is severely skewed in many states and among many communities. Even in metros like Delhi is highly affected.
It has a severe impact on the society. India have to pay a heavy price so far crime, national productivity and many other aspects of national importance are concerned.
Unmarried young men, full of adrenalin, are a huge burden in any society (well documented in China too). General crime rate goes high in such a society. Crimes against women increase many folds.
It also has a domino effect. People in such societies show a increasing trend to go for boys, skewing that ratio further against women. Bringing up a girl child becomes more difficult.
"Matribhumi" is a nice film, depicting very real threat in future in many Indian societies.

Desi: Abortion is not illegal in India? If a fetus is being aborted, there is no criminal or illegal act. So why the govt. intrusion into the legitimate practice by doctors? Do you support a communist philosophy and want the state to determine what is right for every individual?

Desi: So?
India also has a lot of poor people also. Should India solve that problem by confiscating from the rich and giving to poor?
If govt is concerned about a population skew, govt can establish many programs with incentives and education. This does not justify an arbitrary govt intrusion into what should be a legitimate practice by doctors.

Desi: Do you mean testosterone or do you mean adrenalin? We need to get the hormones right first.
Should the govt castrate young unmarried men or fine those not married off by age 20? I think it is not govt business to embark on a program to reduce the ratio of men by measures that amount to govt intrusion.

There is a huge difference among "abortion" and "killing a girl child" (who is already born) and then selective abortion. Selective abortion must be stopped. We must not produce kids if we cannot take care of it, irrespective of its gender. This is more important for middle class and beyond, i.e prosperous people.

Yes, govt is doing that. This ban (on selective abortion) is an added one and very important one. We have our own responsibilities to build a better society/country, besides govt efforts. We must carry those out. If we do not realize the importance of such laws and our own responsibilities, then we have to be forced to obey the laws. That's why civilized countries and societies have laws.

No, I mean adrenalin (not testosterone) that gives us the sense of excitement. It?s not connected with sexual pleasure/desire, but craving for excitement.

I believe girl child does not deserve parents who can't take her. Also I believe, Parents should have the right choose the sex of the baby if it is possible to do that without resorting to killing. Though It is debatable when can it be considered killing.
Skew in the gender could be a problem.I believe it would eventually create demand for girl child eventually instead of domino effect if the law enforcement is strict and efficient in punishing crimes.
