Greetings All !!
I'll be relocating to Blore (this year) and wanted to get a feel for the kind of compensation I could expect. Your advice would help me get a 'ballpark' sense and also help me not seem like a complete fool when HR folks throw numbers at me :)
Background info about me -
After completing my Masters (Comp Sci), I joined a top-notch software company (The company recently made a xx billion $ offer for ... ) and have stuck around since. It's been 4 years living life as a software developer. I love my work + work-place and have strong C++ (Windows) & Managed Code (C#) skills. I've done reasonably well at workplace and have been fortunate enough to work on products that impact millions (maybe billions, someday :))
My employer, unfortunately, does not have a dev facility at Blore and I am hence looking at other 'product-dev' companies. Just to name a few - GOOG, AMZN, YHOO (could get gulped). I am not averse to working at a start-up as well.
Cutting the already long story short ... What kind of salary can I expect? I was thinking of throwing a 15L number into the ring (Bonus, Stocks separate). Does that sound too un-reasonable?
Thanks for taking the time to read.

Yes, a base salary (without including joining bonus, annual bonus and stocks) in the range 14-20 is what you should expect. In these companies interview performance matters A LOT.
I have BE + 5.5 years of experience. Since many employers treat an MS as one (or rarely, two) years of experience, you should come in the same salary range.
Incidentally I've recieved an offer of 19 lac base from your current employer's development center in Hyderabad. This is on the higher side for them - the average there is more like 15 lac.
Also, you should know that your employer has a Research wing in Bangalore which you can join.

Mulls,
I also hear that people get matching salaries now of what they get in US (but haven't heard any first-hand accounts)
What kind of position are you looking for ?
Since your company is big in India too (and planning to get bigger :-) ) ,have you researched the option of internal transfer to Hyd?
I have a similar background as yours - currently working in San Jose, CA. Currently in a dilemma as to which position to apply for, in the Indian market (R2Iing in May 2008)

Hey fairoaks3,
Wow - May is soooo close :) Good luck :)
No, I'm not looking at hyd. I'm concentrating only on B'lore (family constraints). My company has an R&D center at Blore but the positions there are limited. I haven't done any serious research on other companies yet. I'm still collating information, leads and slowly getting into the interview prep mode.
As for salaries, I've heard that too :) On every visit, I hear stories of matching salaries. I guess I won't really know until and unless I start talking to a few companies. I'd be happy if I could end up with even 50% of my US salary.
Let me know how it pans out for you. I have 6 more months to kill :)

I am planning to move to North India, so researching options in Delhi/Gurgaon.
Will keep you posted.

If your current company is giving a good offer, I would take it irrespective of location. You can always jump ship in a year or so. And also if you have foot in the door with a good package it will be easier for you to negotiate a good deal based on this in the near future with a company which is in your location of choice.
Also companies tend to like local candidates(india in this case) rather than overseas candidates if they can find any.

Wow - Thanks for the advice. It does make sense and I'll pursue via internal channels as well.
