After living for almost a decade in USA, and comparing life before coming to US, i came to a decision that my going to USA was a result of the hype surrounding the USA. While growing up in India we Indians are exposed to music /movies which depict life in USA as very rosy. I also used to listen to BoneyM, Beejees, Abba, and watched popular movies such as Rambo, Rocky, True lies, etc etc. and was under the impression that life in USA was way more comfortable than India.
Back in 1996 I was employed in Century Rayon in Century chemicals as a shift incharge of a Caustic soda-Chlorine manufacturing plant (100 tonnes per day) and it was a life full of Amenities such as cheap housing (Rs 50 per month, free utilities, company car ride, free meals, company uniform and free medical etc.
My line of thinking was like "if I am so comfortable in a developing country like india , i would be in bliss in USA"
but after living their I realised how much hyped life in USa is. The sad part is that a lot of our nations top talent is fooled into this trap (one thing leads to other and people are stuck in USA aginst their wishes) and lead boring, colourless, uninteresting, hollow lives!.
But do not get me wrong, coming to USA for studies and staying for a while makes us a much enriched experience, but clearly the hype and expectations surrounding the USA is the reason we feel that we are not making substantial progress their. People going to USA must be well informed about the attributes of life there and only then they should make an informed judgement. Perhaps we ourselves are also guilty of selective listening/intrepretation of US.
gotta go, I have to buy some beer and some gulaal and holi colors!
Wish you all a happy holi!

Raja your thread has always provided motivation to all reading it including myself. I am now here for last 8 months and expecting to be here for rest of my life and not having to count the years in India. They should change the title to veteran and not 4yrs as after 2yrs the number doesn't have any significance. Your blog keeps the spirit of people high so continue the good work. More people may be able to see light at the end of the tunnel. Thanks for all your time you have given to the forum.

Migrant, thanks for the kind words. I am glad I am able to provide some motivation to some members. The thing that is most important in life both here in India and USA as well as other nations is clarity of thought.
People should once and for all ask themselves just one question ie whether they will be able to live like that for the rest of the lives ,whether in India or abroad.
In recent times India has changed for the better and returning to one's own country is getting easier.
Mike I have relocated to Goa from Gurgaon. But still send me a PM.
regards
RH

Dear RH,
I am environmental engg looking for a job in bangalore. I have a BE in civil and MS in EE, with 6 years of experience in env. consulting. Have worked on lot of remediation projects, air compliance, SPCC, SWPPP, heavy metal removals, etc. Worked in mining (checking thier air compliance) and conducted well installations etc. I am having a real hard time finding jobs and companies for that matter, that will fit my experience. I would be eternally grateful to you, if you can provide some suggestions on how to approach. Will be R2I'ing in about 3 months.
I have read all your posts and you seem to have a lot of experience in this field. Could you help please??

Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE) hires environmental engineers. You may try there. Heard from a cousin who has just joined IVRCL that they too recruit EnvEngrs for their water treatment projects. Are you interested in only core environmental engg companies? I ask that because IT companies are also getting in that arena where they need expertise for the domain.
I am sure RH will weigh in and he is the right person as he is in that field.

blaze, you are not getting job offers mainly due to 2 reasons
Also being down to earth in dealing with people is the key.
indian employers mostly do not value US or abroad experience much.
The above domains (remediation , heavy metal removals, etc. ) are not much valued in India.

TCE is not a good paymaster. I have twice rejected their offer. It is good for people with less then 5 years experience. They have traning classes and such stuff. IVRCL is not a consulting Engineering firm but a contractor.
Consulting engineering firms in India design and prepare tender documents that Contractors have to abide by. Evaluation of tenders is also done by consultants as well as construction supervision.

Thank you Vapasi and RH for your immediate response.
My Civil Engg background, I am hoping, will be helpful within the Water wastewater arena. I am open to both WW and EE companies (health and Safety, water reuse). During my BE years, I have done research projects on water resue on the Janjhavati water stream etc. Have a bit of GIS/GPS/water modeling experience as well. I don't like the construction field (I am really bad at it).
Always wanted to relocate to India and finally its time. Starting selling all our furniture etc. Now its getting panicky not being able to hear back from any companies.
Many of my college maters are here in the US and the others in India all have either changed to IT or are in construction or railways. So not much help there. Wish I had some help in terms of resume preparation or name of companies that conduct WW or EE work in bangalore. Its tough out there. I struggled coming here and seems like its going to be the same going back too....(sorry seems like I am just rambling..)
What sort of salaries are expected for someone with my experience? Any ideas??

RH, I know that IVECL are just contractors but they might find use for people like member blaze. That's why it is important for blaze to let us know what his preference is.
I agree TCE is not a good paymaster but may not be a bad option to start with when the opportunities are limited. Depends on the urgency of member blaze's R2I.

Blaze, right now Hyder Consulting is hiring in Bangalore. For salaries if I were you I would just let the employer make a first offer and do not give a number. The party that gives a number first in a negotiation usually loses.
