Best Dish TV options in India - Tata Sky, Airtel, Sun Direct

We chose Airtel DTH over TataSky.

Tatasky has a tricky way of making you sign up for their top package which costs about Rs 550 /Mo. We wanted a few specific channels - Kannada channels, Colors, CNN/BBC/NGC/Discovery, India news channels, and Movie channels including HBO. In Tatasky, you have to first get a south saver package for about Rs 280 and then add a package for specific channels - eg. to get "colors" you need to add "Lifestyle gold" pack for Rs 45. It gets trickier - there is a south value and a south jumbo and a south saver, which include and exclude various channels which you may want. Very soon you are pushing towards the top package. In addition you have to buy a box for Rs 1600.

Airtel was more straightforward, we got all the channels we need in one (South Mega) package for about Rs 270/Mo. They have a graded progression of packages (eg. South Mega package is south economy + a few channels) . We also got an offer where the set top box + 3 months free service was bundled for Rs 1800.

The only downside is Airtel still does not have the DVR (record, rewind/fast forward) and a higher quality component video output. Tatasky (+) has these features in a higher priced STB.

We signed up for TataSky Annual Mega package where any new channels gets automatically added. I also get 12 showcase movies free per year. I have had few interruptions when rains are very heavy otherwise we are satisfied with their service so far. We have it for 2 rooms.

I recently subscribed to sundirect HD and I'm using it with a 52" Sharp and 32" Sceptre both from costco. It works really well with the samsung STB with HDMI out. Well IPL on HD was great experience with home theatre coupled .

I checked with hathway STB and it didn't work as it was only PAL o/p.

Hi,

New to this forum and have some clarifications.
I bought Sony Bravia KDL40EX700 from Japan, NTSC and planning to send India.
Need some info regarding best available STB which is capable to output both NTSC & PAL system and also have HDMI support.
Wrt comment#13(mentioned above), SUN DIRECT has both NTSC & PAL output but I would also like to know about:

Tata Sky plus/HD - NTSC support ?? - HDMI support ??
Sun Direct - NTSC support is OK - HDMI support ??
Dish TV - NTSC support ?? - HDMI support ??
Big TV - NTSC support ?? - HDMI support ??

Highly appreciate if someone share the info on ?? in above text.

Thanks

USDESI2009;259758I currently have Sun Direct here in Chennai. One advantage to it is that the set top box has NTSC and PAL output. So I dont need an extra PAL-NTSC converter. Those of you who are using Tata Sky, can any of you please check the setup options in the box and let me know if it has an option to switch video output to NTSC??

Hi,
Could you please tell me the model number or something of the Sun Direct STB ? I have a Sony bravia KDL-40v2500 NTSC only TV. I would like to purchase SUN STB if it can support NTSC output. Also, please let me know if SUN HD supports NTSC or not. I heard that even if the HDMI is used ( digital ), it will still not work with NTSC only TV

Aravind,
I'm planning to buy the 52" Sharp 810UN model. Which Samsung STB are you sing ? Model # ?
Are you connecting from Samsung STB (Sundirect) output HDMI to TV HDMI Input directly ? if so, is the output NTSC THEN ?
I know share supports PAL only for INPUT 2 (Component Input) and not for HDMI (NTSC only)

Thanks

Hi Murali,

I too have same model NTSC TV, Initially I had Airtel Connection, but it only supports PAL, and I switched to dishTV, which supports HDMI o/p, now we get most of the channels with good quality with out any Atlona PAL/NTSC cdm-660 Converter.
