Can i settle down comfortably?

Post by okemos »

Hello Members,
I am planning to R2I in Mid 2013 once i receive my USC. I am planning to go back to my lovely home town Chennai. Been here in the US since 2000 with stable job and stable income. I bought a house here in the US with more than 30% down and unfortunately now my house is under water. I never invested in RE in India. I do not have any RE or any kind of saving in India.

I have two kids age 7 and 5. Currently i have around 1C in savings account. I have little less than 3 years to get my USC but wanted to go back to India as early as possible. Even though i have no pressing reason to go back to India, i have no reason to stay here in the US except for USC.

I need some valuble suggestions and ideas from you guys. What should i do now? Also if i go back this year, do you guys think i can settle down peacefully with my savings? Offcourse i need to go with some job in hand.

If you are going back and ready to work,I dont see a reason why anything else will matter

with your exp,I'd expect you should do good

but if you have plans to semi-retire or retire shortly, then its a whole lot diff game

your assets and wealth come into play then

Do you need to rent or buy a house or do u have a house in Chennai
Does ur spouse work
do you have any passive income or other sources

answers to these kind of questions might be able to help u evaluate ur case

2013 is sometime from now

Check some AAPs on this forum and you might get an idea on what you might expect

Having 1C in savings is good, but investing them would clever idea, Since real estate prices are growing everyday in india.

Coming back to settling down in Chennai. I think buying a house, car and others for your stay would cost to most of your savings.

So after everything is done , you need to start from scratch.

Sorry If I am pessimistic.

May be others who have better idea...

There was another thread like "...how much is enough .." perhaps that would address the BIG question.
The really really big "settle down peacefully" concept even eluded the original siddhartha, even after he got the enlightenment. Hundreds of bodhisattvas after him took a shot at that and had various versions over the eons. And now this forum......
Seems like one ought to work like there will be no retirement. Share wealth with spouse and children and die without any prolonged illness that eats up the savings and destroys the estate.
Whatever you have cooking in your brains, delay is always a good strategy. Thank Parkinson for that idea.

Stup123. Thank you very much for your response. To answer some of your questions, actually i am not planning to retire. I would either continue to work in IT or start my own business.

I know 1C is not enough to buy a decent house in Chennai. Also if i don't work in India, i will not have any other source of income. My spouse is a proud home maker.

Thank you Shriny for your honest opinion. I very well know that i can not do much with my saving. I need to invest my money somewhere so that i can get atleast 15 to 20% return every year and at the same time continue working. Definitely i will not invest in the stock market or FD.

When you find that "somewhere" which gives 15-20% return/year, and is not stocks, please share with us. Assuming it is legal, I am curious.

atleast 15-20% on investment ?- that might be a big optimistic..if you are looking at investment opportunities available for all.
No stocks - Is it bcos u r against such investments or you r not sure abt stock market.I am also not into stocks(for that matter ,any investment) because I dont have a clue abt stocks n market

The forum offers such diverse stories on the human condition. A immigrant from a far away land with two small children, a non-working (and proud) spouse and house under water aspires to start his own business and/or hopes to get 15-20% ROA every year: a remarkable resilience of human spirit !!
