Obama's Buffalo for Bangalore plan

Post by tejasvee »

rajram123;175489As a leader and citizen of USA, Obama's perspective on jobs getting outsourced is correct, similar to the Indian government's perspective on protecting the local Indian consumer market by levying a 110% duty on imported cars and such. From a presedent's pespective he should be more worried about Needles, Arizona than Bengaluru.
Agreed.

What is being condemned is not his focus on Buffalo or Needles. But demonization of BengaLuru or other foreign locations. US companies in India pay close to 34% tax (33 point something). US companies in US will pay 35% tax. How in the world he expects Buffalo to benefit by preventing or discouraging companies from going to BengaLuru for 1% tax threat?

What is being condemned here is his narrow foreign policy objectives, that will cause harm to US itself down the line. Read the Raman article I am posting at the bottom.

farfromhome;175482tejasvee,
I read the NYTimes editorial in total including the 140 comments (they closed it down before I could give my piece of mind). The comments were much better than the editorial.
Maybe they got afraid that their bluff of preaching India unrealistic terms is called out now ;)

farfromhome;175482 As for Lou Dobbs, he should changing his program to "Mexico in Peril : How will US be affected?." I don't see anything else apart from Mexico and immigration problems in his program. His take is useless both for Democrats or Republicans.

He is a mouthpiece of those who are in favor of protectionism & tall walls to keep everything 'foreign' out. His kind are very dangerous. I recently started getting SMS from folks in Hyd & Blru calling people to boycott US goods & brands. It's still a very small phenomenon as a reaction to Obama kind of nonsense, but it has chances to pick up steam. Remember, during Bush's unpopular policies, it was India where he had massive positive image regarding Americans.

R2I-2019;175361The major reason for h1b slots still available is due to USCIS getting strict on h1b abuse.
Yes. But don't you see a drop from demand too steep? Just 3 years back people were fighting at the rate of 1.5 to 2 lakh applications wherein lottery was necessitated. Suddenly, the quota remains open for new applications even after 7 weeks. Don't you see beyond the strict rules, something else is playing a role here?

I talked to my cousin in Infosys, Blru over the weekend. He says they have almost stopped visits to US for 'unnecessary' visits. I don't think Infosys was abusing H1s to that extent, but that's a separate discussion.

open_earth;175263What a spin. This is no different than the right wing idealogue spin from the likes of Limbaugh, Hannity and Coulter.
Fair disclosure: I did not vote for Obama when I had the chance. I still think he is an inexperienced young guy, great orator, but horrible in actions as evident now from his first few months in office. Protectionism is going to be his hallmark which is bad for general Americans, Indian Americans and India in particular.

Read more from an expert B. Raman about Obama's poor policies that are not only going to cost India & Israel, but also US itself. I am no expert at Raman's level, so I would leave it to the expert to dissect Obama's policy. You can now bring back your arguments on Raman's "spin"

Obama's Jimmy Carter Image Creates Problems for US
By B. Raman

Excerpts:
6. Israel and India have been the most affected by the perceived soft policies of the Obama Administration. Israel is legitimately concerned over the likely impact of this soft policy on the behaviour of Iran. South Korea and Japan, which would have been concerned over the implications of the soft policy of the Obama Administration, had no national option because they had no independent means of acting against North Korea. Israel will not stand and watch helplessly if it concludes that Iran might follow the example of North Korea. I have said it in the past and I say it again that Israel will not hesitate to act unilaterally against Iran if it apprehends that it is on the verge of acquiring a military nuclear capability. It will prefer to act with the understanding of the US, but if there is no change in the soft policy of the Obama Administration, it will not hesitate to act even without prior consultation with the US.

7. India too has been noting with concern the total confusion which seems to prevail in the corridors of the Obama Administration over its Af-Pak policy. Some of the recent comments of Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State, about alleged past incoherence in the US policy towards Pakistan and about the part-responsibility of the US for the state of affairs in the Af-Pak region have given comfort to the military-intelligence establishment and the political leaders in Pakistan. Obama's new over-generosity to the Pakistani Armed forces and his reluctance to hold them accountable for their sins of commission and omission in the war against terrorism have convinced the Pakistani leaders that they have no adverse consequences to fear from the Obama Administration. India would be the first to feel the adverse consequences of this newly-found confidence in Islamabad vis-a-vis its relations with the US.

8. India also has reasons to be concerned over the definite down-grading by the Obama Administration of the importance of the USA's strategic relationship with India. This down-grading has given satisfaction to Pakistan as well as China.

9. Jimmy Carter took a little over three years to create the image of the US as a confused and soft power. Obama is bidding fair to create that image even in his first year in office. The North Korean defiance is the first result of this perceived soft image. There will be more surprises for the US and the international community to follow if Obama and his aides do not embark on corrective actions before it is too late.
