My simple question : Can anyone answer this?
surya2009;191395I have decided to return to India (Bangalore) after 12 years of NRI life. I am not sure when I return to India I want to work for somebody (which I did all my life). I want to start/run my own business in India but here is my dilemma
1. Knowing the current economic situation I am not sure starting a business in India is a good idea now
2. Business/People in metro is changed over the past several years that there will be heavy competition
2. Also, I realize that doing business in India is harder than in overseas (US, Europe,..) like infrastructure issues, lack of ethics.
Appreciate if anybody has gone through this dilemma to share and offer suggestions/tips. Thanks.
1. Deciding to start a business should be based on long term economic prospects and not current economic scenario. Indian economy is expected to grow between 6-8% in the long term.
2. A sustainable competitive advantage is essential to be successful in business. You should welcome competition as it makes you a better businessman and is an indication of growth prospects.
3. Your point is correct but your competitors are also facing the same issues. Your business model has to be build around these issues. IMO, every issue is a business opportunity if you know how to fix it, wheather it is quality of airports or quality of plumbers or lack thereof.
You can also get a systematic way of building a business idea from the following book
Innovation and Entrepreneurship - Peter F. Drucker

R2I :
Welcome to india.
You should have the tenacity to hold on and evaluate for yourself for a period of 3 months.
About your competency, if you can come with some definite work guaranteed your own start is definitely
a possibility.
After few days, if you are looking at a Metro, you will recognise and realise that the wallet gets
evaporated quick time!!!
The reality is inflation is high, availability of essential services come at a premium and almost on part at
international rates ( I had to pay an Electrician Rs.1500 for 3 hours to come home to re-install UPS):
AC mechanic for servicing Rs.2200; Commercial rentals depending on place can vary between
Rs.15000 to Rs.30000 per month for a modest area of 500 sqft to 1000 sqft. Living expenses excluding rentals
touch 30000 minimum per month for a moderate life style.
Ideally if your networth is considerable to cover 3 years of sustainability; 18 months to break even and
thereafter to enable you to accelerate and grow; unless you have a concrete business plan and willing to
put in that 12 x 6 x 350 effort; you are better off finding a job;
This is true for every business entrepreneur. More than competition, it is positioning of your products and
services and gaining reach that will take time.
Best Wishes in whatever you chose to do
Cheers
