Curious to see if anyone else have thought about this?

Post by gvi »

We considering r2i in the 2-3 years :) We have a 3.5 year old son who is in preschool currently. We are looking into an international school in India and assume our son goes to that school till his 12th std. However if he decides to come to US for his UG, we are debating whether we should come back with him stay in the same college town or closeby for 4 years or so till he finishes under graduation.

Since he is our only child so far, we obviously want to be closer to him. We are fine going back to India once he finishes his UG and when he is in Masters. We somehow think he will be matured at that point to carry on with his own life since he will be around 22/23.(when he enters masters) .

Not sure if this plan is silly or even feasible. Can anybody share your opinions or thoughts about this?

Thanks in Advance

Please leave your kid alone once he's in college!! If you haven't already, watch "Finding Nemo".

Most people try the emotional-cost-averaging scheme by having more than one child. I see that you are also planning to do that....that "so far" is so promising, isn't it ? Keep at it and have fun....

Grand schemes work well when they do ( member P_Jani put it so eloquently in celebrating his son's achievement in these United States ) and very often with minimal (or subversive) parental scheming.

Parents that live in India (never lived in US) that made money from IT are sending their kids to US for UG since India is hypercompetitive. I hear that their kids turn out OK in America. Except, they date and marry to their wish and settle in US itself. If the kid is groomed properly, the likelihood of getting spoiled in UG is less. Coming to US and living will be a costly proposition for you. Already, you will be paying through your nose for your kids UG course.

Are you USC? otherwise how you are going to come back and stay with your son? UG is cheaper in India.... but USC with no parents income he may able to get good grants... and cheap loan...Do not put any money under his name... International school may get some prestige in Nepal-Shrilanka-Bhutan-Bangladesh but no one give a $hit in US. Don't waste your money behind that....

OP, I see way too many potential variables in the equation.
1. You are assuming that your son will do his UG in the US.
Who knows, after 14-15 years he may get into the IIT or not wanna go to the US or something.
2. You are assuming that he will want to do a Masters. Who knows what field he will be interested in and whether it will warrant a Masters degree...
3. You are assuming that he will be okay with mom and dad being with him during hi UG (a nightmare for most boys that age:wink)
etc. etc.

Would suggest that you stop planning this much for the poor boy and wait and see what he wants to do, where he wants to be etc. Somehow I cant help but think that you have already decided on marriage plans as well...

Though you are thinking...way too ahead...... your child does not have to go to an international school- to be able to go to US for Undergrad.
A lot of us..were away from home for UG..so our kids can be too...even if it's outside the country. The world is getting smaller.

About going to the US with the child- You may even be required/ forced to- To make money in dollars and save on his living expenses, though deserving international students- do have Aid/ grants/need based scholarships available.
