It all depends on household, place, opportunities etc. Though, I believe it will be difficult to live with parents/inlaws after staying alone for couple of years.

I have a friend who moved to a small town and joined family business. No issues at all. But the DW decided not work as there are no opportunities for IT work in that town. It took 6 months to settle down, but both are happy.

How many of R2I people are living in joint family and hows their experience?If living in nuclear family..how is it different than living in US?

I moved back in the same city where my parents live. But I stay at a different place about 20 mins from my parents house. I think this has worked out a lot better for my wife. my parents visit on the weekend stay for one or two days. Some weekends we visit them. This has worked a lot better than i had originally anticipated. My parents get to see their grandkids a lot more (compared to if I had stayed in a different city ) and my wife can also have her own kitchen and I get to go to my parents house whenever the wife is away or busy on her own.

i would have undergone daily mental torture from my wife if we had stayed in same house with the parents :)). At this point in my life mental peace is more important to me .

I do not think a lot of R2i folks have tried the approach of living in a different apartment in same city. Most of them usually try to go to a different city to have their own space. I think the option I described is worth exploring for future R2i folks.

We stay with my inlaws and it is better in the sense, we don't have to worry about paying bills/gorcery shopping or cooking for that matter. MIL/FIL takes care most of it. We chip in when and where necessary but the main responsibility is not on us persay. Expenses are lower so is the rate of privacy (but nothing that will cause us a mental trauma). What have I noticed that when I was in USA, I was finicky about many things, like things in kitchen or living room arrangement..but now with inlaws I have learnt to loosen up a lot. Learnt to take it easy and be considerate of their age and individuality. Over and all it is not that bad.
