How to buy diamond

Post by rsom »

We did that too.Diamonds are a girls best friend. When we did comparison shopping India is cheap .Ceteris Paribus, it is a 4 for 1 pricing w/brands like Tiffany,Kay etc.. and 3 for 1 with Indian Brands like Taniksq.

Like any Precous Stones market, resale prices depends on your ability to hold on the asset.

Diamonds are all about 4 C's. Cut,Clarity,Color and Carats.

Going_nowhere: I was not so lucky. The one we did in Mumbai costed a lot more (Sigh!!!) and is sitting in a bank locker since, if thats any consolation.

Early this year, I got a diamond earrings and necklace custom made for my wife from an Indian friend of ours who lives closeby. The lady showed us a few catalogues of diamond jewelry and my wife picked a design and got it customized. The diamonds were of VVS1 quality. The lady gets them done in India in SEEPZ (Andheri). I paid $1200 for the set.

If you're interested, I can call and inquire with her if she can help you.

And I'm not sure you can have diamond in 22-carat gold since that much pure gold cannot hold the stone intact.

How to buy diamond

I researched a lot about buying in America and finally bought my piece in India at Joyallukas jewellers (they have showrooms in all big cities). The only reason was the designs were better in India compared to America and you get 18ct gold(not 22ct for diamonds). I was extremely satisfied with their customer service and they explained all the 4Cs in detail and showed samples before I made my decision. They even have a diamond cave in their Chennai showroom where they explain how diamonds are made and classified.

I think stone wise, it shouldn't matter if you make sure you get the 4Cs you are looking for as all diamonds come with the same IGI certificate whether in India or US. For practical purposes, unless you are looking for a really rare diamond and willing to pay a lot of money, you should stick to the VVLS1/VVLS2/VS1/VS2 for clarity and G/H/I/J for color. Make sure you pick a single big stone for carat count and not a lot of small stones put together. It holds more value that way.
