Hi all Canadian r2ied, planning to r2i members
I was not sure where to post this query. Just searched on canadian PR card and my search result put me on this forum.
I recently r2ied (Oct 2009) from the States. Whilst in the states we had applied for Canada immi as a backup plan (the usual story). Surprisingly we got it within a year but as we had made all r2i preparations we came back. Also we wanted to be with our near ones after a long time. The plan was to stay in India for couple years more, if things settle down, forget about Canada. But unfortunately we might have to think of Canada as our primary plan now.
The reason being : My hubby is not at all happy with his current job and is trying hard to switch but in vain. His judgement of getting a good job here proved to be wrong. If he does not get a satisfactory job, we might have to think of Canada. We are in a dilemma at this point.
Could you share your experiences and offer suggestions? Especially regarding applying for job in Canada? I assume some of you must have read my eariler posts related to r2i, schooling etc

All I can say is IT jobs in India is much better than Canada. You are better off living in India and since you have moved recently.... If your hubby is not happy in India (which Indian City you are in?) and not able to find a good job then I would say it will be more difficult to find good IT job in Canada as well (I don't know what skills he has and what kind of opportunities he is looking for).
I was in similar situation couple of years ago when I went to Canada but came back to US in less than 2 years, reason being weather and not many good IT opportunities in Canada compared to US (and now India).

Negatives about Canada:
1. Canada has a distinction of having most educated and qualified janitors, truck drivers and labors.
2. It is not easy to get IT jobs in Canada. Getting the first job is the most difficult.
3. Employers here want Canadian experience and don't even want to accept US experience
4. Competition for IT jobs is intense
5. High taxes and high prices all around so saving is less (there are large malls in the US/Canada border towns just to serve Canadians...but Canada border security personnel inspect your car and car's trunk to ensure that you are not brining anything in without paying customs duty...yeah, its that bad)
6. Super expensive real estate. This surprises to most analysts but theory is that large number of chinese millionaires are pouring their money into Canadian RE
Positives:
1. Govt provided healthcare which is as good as the US (if not better) in most cases.
2. You get some money for child support i fyou don't have much income (as opposed to less taxes in the US)
3. Standard of living comparable to the US
4. Cities like Toronto and Vancouver have far temparate climate than upper midwest US
5. Summers are just wonderful
6. Large number of Indians of every kind. So If you are from Punjabi, you will feel at home in Brampton (suburb of Toronto) and if you are Tamilian, you will find your kind in another suburb.
7. Good primary education for kids (no different than the US)
PM me, if you need any specific information.

Dear Anudeep,
What was your primary motive to r2i?Or are you open to move back after a few years and r2i was just a temp phase?
I may be sounding like trying to dissuade you from your plan. But no...I am really trying to understand. I kind of agree with back2desh on his views about job scene in canada and the weather is really extreme.

Things on job front are improving in India.. so keep trying you will get something that your hubby might like. Going to Canada w/o job would be high risk proposition.

Very well, precisely put points. Definitely consider these before you start planning another move. Many people from Canada have moved to and from India couple of times.

The only good thing about Canada is that you get the Resident Permit (PR) [equivalent to Green-Card in US] very fast probably less than a year (Mine I got in six months).... Once you have PR you can freely work without any work-visa etc. But the sad part is IT Jobs in Canada is not that good (India will be way better w.r.t. IT jobs). If you are just husband/wife with no kids you may want to give it a try going to Canada as there is not much to loose, you can just go as a visitor and if things don't work out come back. But if you have kids then I would really advice you to think over before going to Canada. Landing to the new country, with no job and looking for a job, starting fresh etc will put enormous amount of pressure and stress in your life.
As mn_op pointed out, the taxes are very high, real estate is very expensive (if you want to live in a good suburbs), apartments are not that good:(, weather is real extreme even place like Toronto though it is closer to US border but it is still up North :).
Think before you make this major decision, and I am sure R2Iers will help/guide you provided if you send more details about your hubby (years of exp in IT, area), whether you have kids etc....
Just 2 cents worth of my advice!

jupiter_009, Did not realize that you are from GTA. I usually like to have only friendly conversations with my fellow Canadians :-)

Yup, we are pretty much the neighbors. Friendly conversations wouldn't hurt too much, eh? :)

Thanks a ton, everyone, for the useful info.
Sharing details:
1. Hubby is a Project Manager with a renowned It company in Pune (we have r2ied to Pune, our native). His skills set - IBM AS/400 with a total of 11 years of experience
2. 2 kids - 8 yr old daughter and 2 yr old son
3. primary motive to r2i - wanted to be with family
4. r2i was not a temp phase, we had planned our r2i move. we got our PR cards just a week before we were to leave for India
5. It has been 6 months now. Hubby is still with the same company which sent him to US on H1 visa. He wants to change his current job but his skill set and 11 yrs exp is sometimes considered as an 'over qualification'. Companies just want senior developers, not PMs
6. No, we do not plan to move to Canada UNLESS my hubby gets a job there. My precise question is: whether it is time for him to start applying for a job in Canada and if yes, can any one of you help (in terms of recruiters, resume sites etc)
The above replies sure don't seem encouraging:( but they are honest and that's what matters !
