Who is your favorite Tamil Music Director?

Post by layman »

billyblue;260898VWbuggy78 - I do not know the knitty gritty of music - carnatic or hinustani or classical or whatever. Have ears and listen to music and ARRs music is honey to my ears and my soul. Whenever I feel like listening to songs, I choose ARR over IL or English songs thats because I am able to connect to his ragas, instrument choice, melodies or whatever. I do listen to non-ARR tamil songs - but boy, I can tell almost all of them are waste of MY time. According to me, IL time is long over. I made honest attempts to connect to his music but I fail each time. One instance is when I rushed to get his Thiruvasagam CD on the day of his release in 2005 - but boy, another huge disappointment. Some of his movie songs are way better. Anyways - his music is simply not to my taste. Maybe - as you seem to suggest - my musical taste is inferior because it likes ARRs music. But to me - playing IL's music on my bose surround is like downgrading my music taste. I ain't gonna do that on my bose - but, maybe that's alright for me if its on a radio or tv station. Maybe, I'm content to play few hundred ARR songs in a loop - because they are truly worthy of repeated listening.

Each to their own.I have listened to world famous Oscar winning song "Jai Ho" multiple times and it sounds terrible to me. What is so great in it I ask myself.

Coming back to IR vs ARR, IR connects well to nook and corner of Tamil Nadu. He uses tunes that a villager can relate to. A villager will dance to "Manguyile Poonguyile" than "Jai Ho". IR has numerous gems that are simple and catchy tunes without relying much on flashy music instruments.

Moved my comment to H&B thread as it may not go well with many IL fans around here.

Without any second thoughts, it is one and only Viswanathan-Ramamurthy.

Still their old songs are making rounds even after 40 years. With less technology in that era, they gave importance to the tunes rather than ear breaking drums

I doubt whether present day AR Rahman songs will be in the air even after 20 years. Ilayaraja scores in between them

Vocal Counter Points. Is anybody other than IR who had attempted this?

This song came in 1985.

KV Mahadevan, the forgotten gem

Who can forget the songs of Thiruvilayadal, Thillana Mohanambal, Kandan Karunai, Adimaipenn, Vasantha Maligai, Padikkatha Methai, Vietnam Veedu and Vaanambaadi.

He was awarded national award twice - for Kandan Karunai and Shankarabharanam

On a different note, I do not uderstand why MSV did not win a single national award.

Tegas,
Nice one! Great work by IL on that one.

ARR did a counterpoint track purely instrumental in Couples Retreat for "Tour of the villas"

[quote]
The other theme in Couples Retreat is the more overtly tropical and thus flavorful idea for the island of Eden, heard first in teased fragments at the end of "Jason and Cynthia Suite" but in full at the start of "Tour of the Villas" and reprised in both "The Waterfall" and (closing the score) in "Animal Spirits." Rahman's use of a flute to both carry the tune of this theme and as counterpoint is a lovely touch in every circumstance. The explosive exuberance of this theme in the buoyantly Latin portion of "Animal Spirits" is infectious to a fault; if the first two minutes of that cue doesn't get your ass wiggling in your seat, then get your pulse checked.

Couples Retreat is another gem from ARR but this was for a Hollywood movie though...

Yes, MSV did not even recv a TN State Award for a long time... If you look at his achievements(not songs, just awards)- most of the lifetime achievement awards, kalaimamani etc in the late 90s or early 2000s...
I guess he did not have the reach and work his way with the folks? Also, for a long time MSV-Ramamoorthy duo did music and then they split. I think the reach of his songs even after decades speaks more than any awards or accolades.
IL always is in praise of MSV- He mentioned in one of the interview and have read it somewhere I quote:
?Countless are his songs which melted my heart totally enraptured by their charm. His every song is a priceless jewel. If I have achieved anything in music, I submit them as my humble offering at the feet of MSV.?
Like MSV always says, Men are Mortal, Melodies are Immortal.. His songs will always reign supreme...
