Happy Engineer\'s Day!

Yeah.. you read it right. Engineers have their own day in India and they deserve it as they are the ones building a new India :)) When everyone else can have their own days, why shouldn't they?

In India Sept 15 is celebrated as Engineer's Day in memory of our beloved Sir MV. Mokshagundam Vishveshwariah (Visvesvaraya), popularly and affectionately known as Sir M.V., was born on September 15, 1860 in a village known as Muddenahalli in Chikballapur District, Karnataka.

Let me also list some tidbits, news items, his footprints and his outstanding achievements. India owes a lot to this genius even today, which is nearly 5 decades after his passing away. If there's one Indian whose Bharat Ratna is actually an understatement, it's Sir MV :emrose:

-> Sir MV wrote 3 motivating books: 1)Reconstructing India 2)The Vision of Prosperous India 3)Memoirs of My Working Life (1951)

-> Vishveshwaraiah did so much for AP, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Orissa, MP and even Sindh, Pakistan. Remarkable Indian!

-> The next IIT of India is coming up at the birthplace of Sir M. Vishveshwaraiah. Well deserved -

-> In 2001 Earthquake Kutch & Bhuj dist of Gujarat got severely damaged. But water supply wasn't. Thanks to Vishveshwaraiah!

-> Vishveshwaraiah contributed to today's Pakistan too. Helped Sukkur get water from Sindhu/Indus river over 100 yrs back

-> Vishveshwaraiah built KRS dam in Mysore not with concrete, but lime & jaggary (!) nearly 80 years back. It still doesn't leak or crack big time. Built in just 4 yrs using 10000+ men.

Very cool thread Kiran. From exploring the subatomic particles to outer space engineering pursuits have revolutionized the world.Visited the Hoover dam a few years ago, the engineering is mind boggling.

Man! Do you really have to remind us that most of have managed to get a degree in Engineering? Most of us seem to have better understanding of social sciences than engineering.

I am not comfortable with the stamp of Engineer as I quit tampering with engines after breaking all clocks in my house at the age of 12.

So to all my Engineer friends (with or without degree). Happy Engineers day.

Long ago, when I was studying in one of the top notch, the first and foremost Engg. college,
Of one of the Indian States, they had a suggestion
of Putting the title of " Er" in front of the name of us just like doctors write "Dr." , but somehow no one implemented it !! To Bad !

Darn those Diploma holders, who started getting those fake degrees dirt cheap and hence now a days Engineers are sold, dime a dozen !! [ Just like RMP and GMP in medical fields ruined the career image of those MBBS and MDs ! ]

Never Mind,.. Today is an Engineers’ Day !
And, we are here today to give a salute of 101 Tankers to our
Bloody, Muddy, and Oily spoiled career. Hehehhehehe.
{ for those hands that we made dirty doing somewhere surveying in muddy potholes, drainage, - Yess stepping down in those smelly Manholes to take Invert elevations of RCP and CMP, checking I. C. engines, Turbines, Condensers and other Heat Exchangers, working somewhere with machines, Mills, factories, Machine Shops – Turret and CNC Lathe, Workshops, HVAC units, Power plants, Chem Labs, Electricity houses, Foundry, Design Shops,.... yada yada ]

Here is a basic question of the first semester, [ I was asked in one of the Indian interview, long ago ] let us see if you can solve it today, or not !

If you had studied those Engg. Dwgs. Preparing methods , -- First angle and Third Angle methods and Isometric Views of plan and elevation ( Top View , Front View ) - remember the Bonfire books by one and the only N. D. Bhatt's ( Vol 1 and 2 ) Engineering drawing ?? Rt.?

Anyway here is a simple question. _ I was asked at my first job interview with Lalbhai group of Mills.

Two views are given of a mechanical pattern/ object made of wood ( u know those wooden pattern used in Foundry for molding, Rt. ]

Ok. Draw a perfect square of 3 in sides,
now into the exact center of that one, draw another perfect square of 1 in sides.
That's it. No other lines connected, No other dash lines anywhere, no nothing.

If this is the Plan as well as Elevation of a Pattern Object,
could you draw that Object ( what it should look like ) in 3D ??

1.Mari Kanive dam or Vani Vilasa Sagara dam built across Vedavathi river near Hiriyur.

One should visit this place to see the architectural design Sir MV came up with. It is also said that the dam(water reservior area) resembles India map but to see this you have to go all the way up to the guest house.
Sri Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV and Sir MV's vision to feed water to the so called Barada naadu * Chitradurga and near by towns is commandable. Sad part is that there is not enough rain in this area and the dam was full only 2/3 times ever since it was built.
* Barada naadu=draught land.

How about instead of any curve, the straight lines !

Think of one solid cube inside the other ( both solid ) and the outer one was sliced at 45 degree !

I remember many candidates there at the interview of "Asoka Mills" job, blew it up and started thinking something like,....
the outer structure made of wire frame and inside a cube was hanging with an invisible
hair like string - thin wire,... and so on,...

And, one of our boss guy ( LLB member at LDCE ) , even gave an idea ( to those interviewees on that shoot-table ) that this experiment was conducted in the space , and hence the inside cube was floating in the center,...and all such comics, outside the interview-room I noticed,.. !

Was just hillarious !
