I met another R2I 'er through the forums and the both of us are planning to share a container. But our container usage is not equal (70/30), so how do you share the cost?
Has anyone gone through this, how did you handle it?
I can see 3 Ways to split the cost - actuals, split equally or split based on container usage.
Few things I can think of are
Container fee - Split based on usage
Packing & Loading - Actuals
Moving from Port to 2 Homes - Split equally
Duty - Actuals. But what if customs want to charge us one whole amount without opening the boxes?
Documentation, SED & other fees - Split equally
Loading/Unloading - Split based on usage
Anything else we need to think about here? We want to sort out these ahead of time so there's no misunderstanding later on.

If yours is 30% of the total capacity, what is the other persons utilization? is it 70%? Or do you have empty space?
Assuming there is empty space, which seems to be the only contention, my opinion is - you need to split the empty space costs equally.
The rest seems to align well with your proposal (Exception of Duty - suggest, split duty based on which items is being levied taxes, and Duty is always on actual items and not on whole shipment.)

How to split cost when sharing a container
I had the same question as "van" , apart from what he is asking how about the paper work handled . For example is the whole contaner will go with only one persons name or all the parties who all are sharing need to sigh the papers etc. ?

I have the same question... is the full container booked under one person though multiple shipments are carried out by means of sharing? How this will get handled at the entry port in India? Is it expected that all people sharing the container need be present at the customs?

As far as my knowledge goes, if there are multiple shipments in a container , there would be a Master Bill of Lading(shipping document) which would reflect the name of the destination agent and there would be house bills of lading for each shipment and that would reflect names of the persons whose shipments are shipped in the container.
At the destination, individual delivery orders will have to be obtained from the shipping company and each shipment need to be cleared separately.

I think in the above case it will be simply called as "LCL" and then I am not sure what is the advantage of sharing a contanier except that you know that your item is going with some other R2I'ers member on a specific date .

I also tried ( unsuccessfully) to share the container but learned it hardway, it is not worth to share the container. If you are sharing a container with separate bill then you loose the cost advantage. If you ship the container with one owner,
Loading,
shipping other person house hold from once to other house,
customer duty and its proper division,
making sure other guy don't put anything, which is illegal to ship,
insurance claim,
delivery at two different location
make it more complex

Suppose you get a job, and the employer wants to move within a month. If you are not able to book the container on such short notice, it may be worthwhile to share it anyways... may not be cost-effective.
