Hello,
After living in the US for 13 and 1/2 years , I am planning my R2I in September .
This will be a Transfer Of Residence for me.
I am planning to ship the following from New Jersey to Hyderabad.
47 Inch LCD TV - 2 and 1/2 year old, purchase price $1500, current price around $600 - $700
65 Inch LED TV - Brand New, Unopened - Price around $3000
3 desktop computers
one 23 Inch Computer monitor , used - 1 and 1/2 year old
6 Month Old Onkyo audio Receiver , purchase price $300
2 Sets of 5.1 channel Speaker Systems - 6 Months old - Purchase price of $700 (Sale Price)
1 PS3 Old model, 4 years old
1 400 disc dvd player - 6 years old
1 blu-ray player - one year old
Around 1000 Blu-ray discs + HD DVD's + DVD's (Half Of them are new Unopened) (around 5 boxes may be)
around 15 - 20 Boxes of stuff - all open and used stuff , computer parts, cables, cases , hard disks, books, toys, clothes, Kitchen utensils, etc
I would like to get your opinions about what kind of shipping service would be the best and the approximate shipping costs.
I would also like to know how much money should I plan to pay as Custom Duty for all the above personal stuff.
If any others have shipped similar things, I'd be happy to learn from their experiences. I am reading up on all the other posts too.
Also is there something that I need to do to apply for Transfer Of Residence or is it just a form that I need to fill up while clearing customs back in India.
Thank You for any information you can provide.

Based on the information that you are providing most of the items are electronic and in duplicate so there are bound to be duty on the duplicate items @ 35% of the custom assessed value. Attached is the custom rules and regulations for HHGs into India. Please go through the same it would be helpful for your understaning that if you are eligible for TR then the concessional rate of 15% applies however duplicate items as mentioned by you will be duitable @35%.
Hope this helps

Hi Journeyhome,
Transfer of Residence benefits are available to people moving to india after 2+ years of stay abroad. Most non-electronic items (used) are allowed duty free. A lot of electronics have 15% duty (first piece) and 35% on the second unit of the same (eg 1st TV @ 15% and 2nd TV @ 35%)
TR has to be filed in India when your goods reach the port. Duty cannot be ascertained in advance and can be known only after customs assessment of your goods is completed. To get an estimate of shipping costs, email (on r2i at 21stcenturyrelocations dot com) or call us and we would be happy to provide you with an estimate. For the above listed items LCL would work better for you. If you add furniture (beds, sofas, dining table, chairs etc) you can take a 20' fcl container for yourself at a nominal cost increase over lcl rates.

Thank You for the information. Based on it , I'll try not to have duplicates of items to avoid the 35% customs fees.

Hi again,
Just a couple of questions.
My wife and I are moving back on different dates. My wife being first in July and I would be moving back in October. Is there any restriction that only one item per family will be allowed as a part of the Transfer of Residence ?
In my case if I ship the duplicate items each on a different name in the same family, can I avoid the 35% duty on the second item.
Another question is regarding the location of the customs clearance. If my final destination is Hyderabad, where should I appear for customs clearance in India ? Is it Hyderabad or Chennai or some other place.
Thanks,

TR is on a family basis. So only one item per family.
You should decide where you want to clear the customs. Talk to your transporter. I do not know whether Hyd is a clearing port.
My container was cleared at Delhi, as I asked for it.

TR allowance is per family and not per individual. You may ship on either name as long as each one of you qualifies. The cost of two shipments may be more than the duty you would save so it ideally not worth considering. It may be better to send all together and pay 35% duty rather than making 2 shipments.
If you take a full container, then customs clearance could be possible in Hyderabad as it does have a container depot. If sending less than a container, then your goods would be cleared at either Chennai or Mumbai. You do not have to appear in person for customs clearance in India. You would have to sign the forms and send your original passport for the clearance.
Trust this helps.
