Report saying 1.6 Million Indians in US, even surpassed Chinese population in US

http://in.news.yahoo.com/48/20100610/1246/twl-indians-the-third-largest-immigrant.html

But overall if one looks at the entire India population, the % is very small.

Would be curious if everyone checked the Asian Indian in census form. I think this is the first time they had this classification.

The source does not look authentic and I still am not convinced that the number of people of Indian origin has exceed that of the chinese in US. I concede that the # of Indians has increased quite significantly since 2000.

Here is one link from NTtimes, http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2009/03/10/us/20090310-immigration-explorer.html. The Indian /Chinese population in US appear to be almost the same. The surprising aspect is the number of people of Korean origin.

H1B and non perm immigrants are included. Yes this is the first time the Asian Indian was included as a subcategory. Good for us Indians. Growing numbers translates to growing clout but we Indians have a habit of shooting our interest in the foot by showing open mindedness about all things Indians and broad mindedness about all things foreign.

I will be very interested in knowing the data from the official results of recent census. Hope collectively as US residents we Indians will be able to provide for our mother country in US what Jews resident in US have provided for their mother country.

I don't think this is from Census 2010. The results won't be available before Dec 2010

From
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_United_States_Census

As of April 23, 2010 (2010 -04-23)[update], the national participation rate was 72%.[4] From April through July 2010, census takers visit households that did not return a form, an operation called "non-response follow-up" (NRFU). In December 2010, the Census Bureau will deliver population information to the President for apportionment, and in March 2011 complete redistricting data will be delivered to states.[5]
