Hi,

We are relocating to Bangalore and wanted some info/help on how to get a locker in a bank or a private company in the Koramangala / Whitefield / Outer ring road / Varthur / Marathalli area to store our valuables. Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Visit the branch , they will let you know the process. every bank has it's own way to offer the locker.
In my recent trip to india, I visited couple of banks for locker in AP. they have lockers but most of the banks are asking to invest in their insurance/ULIP plans or some fixed deposit.
ICICI is charging yearly fee more but their FD expections less Rs 10000.00(Ten thousand rupees only).
these conditions may vary at bangalore branches.

We got a locker in a local bank (choose a bank that is close to your home/apartment), usually new branches have lockers available whereas in older branches most lockers are already occupied. You will have to deposit atleast 1 lac in FD to get a big size locker, then the branch manager will immediately assign you a locker otherwise they make you run around saying that no locker is available, come after 3 months etc. After locker allocation you can withdraw the FD, no-one will bother. We are paying Rs 9K for 2 yrs as rental fees for a huge locker, ofcourse to get this locker we had to do an FD for 10 lakhs.
Banks like Kotak Mahindra Bank and Axis bank also provide lockers but their rentals are very high, small lockers run into atleast Rs 4.5 K per year as rental fees.

How safe is bank locker ?

I find most of the banks freely disclose other people info without being asked. One bank manager told me this "Sir, xxx company CEO opened his salary a/c with us, do you know sir his salary is this much ?" I asked "to how many people, have you disclosed my information ?" the manager goes "hee.. hee.. no sir .. i did not tell to anyone"

At some point of time, the bank employee will come to know you R2I and are rich.

What if you get a locker and your valuables are stolen ? Is bank responsible to pay you back in such event ? I am curious.

I too had recently taken a Locker from HDFC bank. I had seen my FIL's locker with SBI. Even the small size of Locker with HDFC is equivalent to the big size of SBI. The proximity is the main criteria and ofcourse no branch manager parts with the locker without squeezing the customer.

As I was a preferred customer, he could not ask me for the FD but pleaded to take ULIP. Because they get the huge commission from ULIPs, most of the private banks insist on ULIPs rather than FDs. Since other alternatives were not available for me, I had to take ULIP to get the locker. HDFC bank also has reasonable rates for the locker. For preferred customers, it is only Rs.750 per annum.

Looking at some of the frauds, 20 years earlier, I had hired a locker.
I did not place any valuable in it. Just some empty boxes and sheafs of papers.
The boxes and the papers were carefully placed and the placements noted carefully.
A year later, I opened the locker and carefully checked. The boxes and the papers were undisturbed.
After that I started using the locker for valuables.
The other aspect is to look at the location of the branch and the strong room.
