In my daughter's birth certificate her name was given as M.xxxx(father's first name's first letter as initial. His name is manni). While applying for her passport her first name was given as xxxx and last name was given as manni. I got her indian passport and US Visa and she studied in school in US for about 6 years. She is in 9th grade now, studying in India. Need to register for Xth CBSE exam tomorrow. In the exam registration form I have mentioned her name as XXXX mani. In her school they are saying that the name should be only as per the birth certificate - M.xxxx. In India every where they will ask for the birth certificate as evidence and not the passport. That should match with the Xth certificate. I thought that if the name in Xth certificate is same as in the passport, then in future there won't be any confusion. If I give M.xxxx for Xth std registration will that be a problem to study in abroad future? Please help me asap.

Yes, it will be a problem. First name and last name can not be interchanged. I know one friend who did and his admission was denied by US university. You should not play around with FN, LN and date of birth. This is problem with many South Indian families as they use their father's name as initial and after moving to US, swap it around as Americans start calling them by their father's name. Either you get the birth certificate changed or get it changed in the passport. Both the documents are important and they should be identical. It does not matter if Indian authorities ask for it not, sometime in the future the kid will land up in trouble.

Agree with #2. The names in important documents should match. And it better they match from as early as possible, which means class X certificate. The confusions it can give rise to are unimaginable. I have had to go to the Social Security office in person to get things changed. That was worse than DMV. And this was before budget constraints made their hours and staff so lean.
Get it changed in the birth certificate to . Hopefully school will let you register and you can produce changed birth certificate soon.
