Where to have the baby delivery (USA or India)

I just joined R2I today and wanted to know from seniors and other fellow Indians/families who may know or gone through dilemma we are having.

We are new to USA and I have one son (born in India) who is 3yrs old. Second baby is due to Jun.

My husband works through an Indian company here in USA and I want to return back to India within the next couple of years but he is not sure yet (50/50).

We are still debating whether to have delivery done here in USA or in India?
He feels to have delivery done here so that even if we go back it will be useful for kid to come back (or for us to come later, if at all). The current scenarios are not favorable or easy to get EAD or GC etc and we may not stay that long also.

I read in some of the blogs that education will be expensive just because kids are born in USA and birth certificate is not from India? IS that true and if so, is it the college education or even primary to higher?

From the blogs it looks like kids born here won't get Indian passport but instead person-of-indian orgin card? I need to know what will be the problems or issues that kid will undergo from 3 to 18 years if we go back to India with baby born here and we went back without getting GC etc?

Please don't be harsh. I have just couple of weeks to make some decision.

Given that no one's crystal ball can look that far into the future, it is best to have the baby where you currently are. There are advantages to being an Indian when living in India, but nothing drastic that you have to travel exclusively just for that purpose. However, bear in mind that the costs for maintaining US citizenship for the child like passport/visa renewals is more when compared to that of an Indian citizen.

Since you already have a Indian Born kid, my advise would be India. That way, none of them feel that there's a special treatment meted out to them.

I don't think education for kid is expensive. My kid is a U.S.Citizen and he has the same fee structure as other Indian born kids.

Kids born in US can get a PIO card which has a validity of 15 years. Apart from couple of visits to the FRRO office to get the Residence Permit (which will have the same validity as your kid's US passport), I don't see any other issue.

Note, I returned back without getting GC (was on H1B).

OR another option is to have baby delivered in USA but apply for Indian passport. This way you are getting best of both worlds. Delivering in USA(the facilities at labor room) is a luxury, I tell you:)

Also how much of hassle or uncomfortable it will be when someone in India asks for birth certificate and they see USA issued one?

Also assuming that kid were to come to back to USA before 18 years of age, what should visa should the parents (Indian passport) have if they want to come back to usa with the kid?

Are there any other advantages or considerations (that my husband thinks) of delivering in USA?

Anirudh, I wish I could give more accurate info but I am no expert and will try to find the thread where we had this discussion.

Apparantly, the citizenship is not by birth(I used to think the same). You have an option of getting Indian passposrt and Indian citizen albite delivering in USA.

Now, what are the advantages: As FFH mentioned, it simply giving equal things to both kids. We never know what future holds for us. At this time you might think what is so big deal in giving one of the kid Indian citizenship and other one USC but if one kid grow up as a smarter one and other one is not, all these question come into picture when they grow older.

But again don't think too much, there many parents right in our friend circle where one kid USC and other one IC. Just weigh the current pros and cons and choose the one that best suits yo0u now.

Other than USC/IC, personally the whole process of how delivery is handled is something you should experience it here. Really nice and appreciative work which you can't get it in India. Even it does, costs more and reserved for affluent families. Since you delivered one of the kid in India you will appreciate more and can draw good comparison and share with us here(promise to come back here :) )
But then if you don't have parents support(if parents don't want to come here for help OR you don't want to treat them as baby sitters) then post delivery recovery is a challenge, but still doable though.

I am pretty sure we discussed at this forum (with links provided) that kids born in US can apply for an Indian passport within 1 year of birth. (We are expecting our first in a few months - delivery here in US but would apply for Indian passport)

Absolutely none.

I don't know if it varies from School to School. The document the school needed was the Original Birth Certificate. I gave them the one from USA (Meadowlands Hospital, Secacus, New Jersey). No further questions asked.

FFH, school is all OK but more complicated process in future, like writing will, getting LIC, opening Bank account, appearing state board exams, civil service exams( I am not sure even if they are allowed)
