R2I From Sacramento To Bangalore via Chennai

Post by iyerwazh »

Hello All,

Can't believe it has been ten long years since I came to the US to do my MS. I thank this country for making me what I am and more importantly, making me realize what my priorities in life should be. Things that I used to take for granted and things that I ignored back in Chennai have now becomes the most important things in my life. In the 10 long years I have been, I have gotten married, had a kid and completed my MBA as well. After thorough analyses and consideration my family and I are moving back to India for good. We are GC holders and we have decided to NOT apply for re-entry permit because we really want to make R2I work and not find a reason to cop-out and head back to the US. Both I and my spouse are from Chennai and we will be relocating to Bangalore because that is where I found a job.

I have been a daily visitor of this site since the late 2010 when I stumbled upon this portal from Google. This site has guided us through our dilemma, n+1 syndrome, paranoia, and the usual deterrents of R2I. I was astonished to find pretty much ALL the answers to the questions I and my wife had. I am truly grateful to the active contributors of this site and what best way to give back than sharing our R2I experiences in this community.

At the moment we are a month away from R2I to Chennai-to-Bangalore and are currently in the process of selling stuff, clearing stuff, packing, getting ready etc. I hope the members and visitors of this portal find our experience useful and helpful if not unique and interesting. :)

Background:
Almost 10 years in the US. Spent 4 years in the South, 1 in North-East and the rest in CA. Recently received GC, son is USC. We are not applying for re-entry permit (may be we are being stupid, stupid, stupid)
Reason to R2I:
We live a comfortable, quiet life here. It does get lonely and boring manytimes. Son does not have many friends around. Did not want to raise an American. Interested in spirituality. Wife is a social animal. I have shifted jobs several times and I hope Indian job environment would offer me the much needed stability. Last but not least, want to take care of my ageing mother.
Are we happy in the US?
No. Or I guess, we do not whether we were happy in the US until we R2I.
Will we R2A?
Do not want to. Hoping we will not have to.
Job?
Started looking for a job 6 months ago. Found a job in Bangalore by tapping in to my network. Pay is adequate if not excellent.
Reasons that will jeopardize R2I?
Family's health, relationship with immediate family, job situation, ability to spend time on spirituality.

R2I From Sacramento To Bangalore via Chennai

I have been reading the R2I to Bangalore of many R2I'd folks here and I must confess that I am really anxious about our move. It appears to me that the cons seems to outweigh the pros, albeit just a tiny bit. I am a bit nervous about the work environment since I have never worked in India. The work culture review of many R2I'ers seems to range from nightmarish to average at best. I am also just a a teeny bit disappointed to hear that in big complexes (we are moving in to Brigade), neighbors pretty much keep to themselves. I still have green, fond memories of intrusive neighbors and my strong protests to my parents demanding privacy. This would disappoint my better half even more given a social animal that she is.

Very nice O-post. Good luck in your move forward. However, in the 2nd, I read that you like intrusive neighbours; but your parents do not ?
As you are mentally well prepared to R2I with all the big issues well resolved, this socializing-privacy balance seems the easy part. Good luck.

Okonomi, I used to demand privacy before I came to the US but I don't think I would mind that one bit now! :-) Both I and my spouse are eager to meet and befriend neighborinos.

I can befriend anyone speaking any language.. all we need to do is carry Google translator:

Post 1 - Huh? ;-) I hope they also speak Spanish. Bring them some gifts made in the USA.

Post 2 - Spanish uh, I was thinking more in Italy or Scotland, but I think I can live with Spanish. ;-)

non roman script languages (from india, japan, china, korea etc.) will make it a challenge...ね ? The hiragana letter is pronounced "neh" and it has the same sense as "no?" in spanish or "isn't it?" in English.
