Well, first pick the car and model. Call the nearest dealer for a test drive. They will bring the car to your house. Once you make up your mind, go to the dealer's shop in the test vehicle, write the check and they will drop you back. After a week car will be delivered. It is that simple. The complication comes, when you take it out on the road. Well that is for another thread.

You should submit an application in triplicate to the government of India along with copies your birth certificate, education certificate, pay stubs, caste certificate..all certified by a local Tahsildar. If you have some influence from a minister it will make it a lot easier.
Just kidding..these days buying a car in India is no different than buying a car in Toronto. Just use internet.

You are probably going to need a valid Indian driving license and insurance documents.

There may be an octroi charge related documentation depending on where you take delivery of the vehicle. The car dealer should help you out with that.

If you have money you can buy anything in India. You can buy a plane and fly it too without any license or training. Always there will be some ways by hook or crook in India for anything.

Here's what i did about 3 weeks back.

went to maruti, ford, toyota, hyundai dealers ....checked out the models, went on test drives, got the quotes and offers that are available etc.

finally decided to get the 2011-I10-Magna. Bargained the price/offers etc.then took their RTGS number or whatever that is called , went to our bank and told them to transfer the amount to the dealer acct number. within 10 minutes this was done and 40 minutes later dealer called saying they are putting the delivery challan or something like that to have the car delivered next day.

for registration/rc book etc we gave address of our house in chennai... gave ration card, gave 6 photos, signed 4 or 5 papers for insurance, rc book, registration, vehicle purchase order etc.

i gidn't give any license or pan card etc since i don't have a pan card nor do i have a indian license yet. i just got the learners permit couple days after i bought the car.

for getting indian license you need again 6 photos, ration card and birth certificate or 10th or 12th standard marksheet (basically a document that has your date of birth recorded officially). pay appln fee, get the form, fill the form and sit in the line... there will be like 40 people sitting and they will take the appln, verify it with the ration card, check the photo, verify DOB ask what is your name ! and that guy will sign it and you have to sit in another line where they call one by one to take the photo.

then if u go thru driving school they will give the LLR to the driving school folks or hand over the LLR to you in the evening.

i went thru a driving school near my house. took like 4 classes (each class if 5 kms duration) and applied for the LLR. now when i go back to India next month will apply for license and get it. there is a rule that we should have LLR for 30 days after which we are eligible to get the real license.
