Transferring money to countries other than India from abroad

Life after returning to India. Finding good school, colleges in India, admission procedures, NRI quota, settling down issues, finding job, house, apartments, leisure activities, activities for kids, social life, Indian government, politics at work, work pressure, work culture, interaction with relatives, friends, attending functions, celebrating festivals, vacations and so on. Initial frustrations, building network, finding maid, drivers, cook and other house hold help.

Transferring money to countries other than India from abroad

Post by Desi »

I need to send some money to Australia from USA.

The various methods by Indian banks such as HDFC quick remit of money2INdia etc only work for transfers to India.

Xoom allows transfers from USA to Australia, however its rates seem to be poor.

I did some search and found a few companies. One is New Zealand based and another UK based with decent conversion rates and low fees.

Am looking for feedback from anyone who has actually done such a transfer, how, etc.

I don't want to go thru the process of sending a dollar check or wiring the money as that would be a costlier process and sending check would be slow with rates not necessarily guaranteed.

Online transfers seem to be best in terms of rates and fees as long as they are not of the types like Western Union which have way high fees.

Desi - Not sure the total amount you are sending. Wire transfers cost a fixed amount of $30 - $40 in US banks. In my experience, doing a wire transfer in USD, and allowing the receiving bank to convert that into local currency has yielded a better conversion rates.

Thanks. The amount I need to send is $2500 and have signed up with a service called currencyonline.com. Their rates seem to be better than Xoom and they tell me rates which change with spot rates and I can lock in at any time.
