I was reading a newspaper article claiming there are 100s and 1000s of people gathered at ram leela ground to support ramdevs fight against corruption. But i sit here and scratch my head for all that i have heard, witnessed, and dealt with in india and only one question comes to my mind "are these people serious?". Mostly Every one is corrupted in india, they all accept bribes. How can their concious allows them To sit there and fight against corruption, i am having a laugh. Agreed ministers and politicians are corrupted on a whole diff level but still. How about we stop taking bribes and become good samaritans then we go out and sit at the ram leela gound to fight against what we are all guilty of.
Anyone else here thinks he is politically motivated or just more publicity? Im not to sure yet but swami satheya sai baba was a dhongi for sure and hope people are not following ramdev with blind faith like they followed satheya sai baba

Your post is very interesting. I was reading a blog by a reputed economist at www.swaminomics.org, He was investigating the conundrum of India's high growth while it is plagued by corruption. He says that it is the lower level people that are more corrupt. He says that with liberalization, corruption has reduced at high levels and is restricted to real estate, mining and licenses. But, at grassroot level everyone is corrupt.
"But on closer examination, they said that the rising problem was low-level corruption at the state and municipal levels. One businessman said the hassle of dealing with these low-level inspectors and functionaries was so exasperating that he had sold his main business. All three agreed that low-level corruption was not so extortionate as to render business unprofitable. But it was a rising everyday headache."

Another author has attributed corruption to India's heritage
"An interesting point has been made about corruption by Deena Khatkhate in his recent book Ruminations of a Gadfly. He cites sociological studies to show that in non-corrupt states like Denmark, people in a village hardly know one another, and family ties are weak — members do not even regularly attend family weddings. But people in an Indian village are in close contact with neighbours, and have strong ties within families and communities. People in authority will be much more corrupt in India, says Khatkhate, since tradition approves the giving of priority to one’s family, caste and religious group over abstract ideals like the public interest. But in Denmark and other developed countries, public interest is viewed as top priority, and this notion is facilitated by the lack of strong family and social networks."

I want to know how many of the people that are in the crowd protesting with Ramdev will register their land at the correct price?

corruption at all levels is unbelievable. Its almost like the normal middle class have given up. But this guy Ramdev himslef owns huge tracts of lands in many cities given by the govt, so he himselft is very corrupt.

I am not sure what is the meaning of Dhongi in context of Ramdev Baba. Yes I agree in India everyone is corrupt, but they are corrupt because they do not have choice! Aam adami is not corrupt by choice but they have been forced into this mess.
What other alternative they have to get their gas-light –water- phone connection or Birth-Marriage-Death certificate? Average Indian from village or service class people with moderate income from city take big hit on their pocket due to day to day corruption. I read somewhere that one poor was not able to get his BPL card because Babu/Sarpanch was asking for 5k to issue BPL card! Percentage of this type population is very large compare to Elite + Babu/Politician. They really do not care Ramdev has 1000+ core and his land deal is clear or not. They are just looking for way to take out their frustration on government.
No political party paid serious attention to curb the corruption. It bad time for congress that its ruling party right now and their own corruption scandal came out big time so people now pushing govt to act by using Ramdev or Anna.
I personally don’t care Ramdev is dhongi or not, but I enjoy this run around given to cabinet ministers by people of India. Govt will try its best not to pass real Lokpal bill or accept Ramdev’s demand, but other side if momentum stays people will keep pushing govt to act time and again.
Indirectly its open war of people against govt. Lets see who wins.

Corruption at the higher levels may be restricted to licenses and granting government contracts- but that is huge- A Raja alone is said to have swindled 50,000 crores- none of which will be recoverable. It also will affect genuine Entrepreneurs and businesses in the country.
The fact that Ex cabinet ministers- A raja, Kanimozhi, Ex IOC member- suresh kalmadi, and ex CEOs of large firms-unitech etc are in jail- augurs well. It would have been unthinkable for that to happen, even a few years ago. Public outcry and media is probably responsible for this. So, yes- more power to such meetings - corrupt people and all.

I think Ramdev is doing this for political mileage. I don't mind it as the cause is for the overall well-being of the country. Its better than other usual politically-motivated causes that divide the populace based on caste or religion (Ram Mandir, Opposition to UCC or migration etc.). While I wish success for his cause, I hope the guy never comes close to power. :) He has whacky ideas. (I won't be surprised if even he himself falls in the net that he is urging the govt to cast.)
As for the population being corrupt, many of them are corrupt not by choice (like Lakshya mentioned) and some of them are corrupt because the system allows them to. Common or little people are the fearful mice who are making merry as the lion (an effective law & order) is away. These don't have the heart to defy law - they do it only because they know others and/or their superiors are also doing it. Think about how the same Indians who openly spit on road or break traffic laws in India religiously follow laws in the US. Once the babu knows that his superior means business when it comes to controlling corruption, he will dutifully put his tail inside and do his duty. Hence its important to hold the top officers accountable - they will make sure that their juniors are also accountable. More power to the cause of controlling corruption (and black money which is one of the legit causes the Baba is fasting for.)

I agree, corruption at one level cannot be better or worse than corruption at another level.
Top babus and ministers have lost all respect for honesty. Any govt licence that can be obtained the right way can be obtained by the wrong way with half the hassle or financial difficulties. Then the guy who accepts the bribe becomes like a contact person and gives good customer service until the work gets done. Now tell me even if you are an honest businessman wouldnt you want use the easier path and get things done. I am facing this in my projects everyday or when I talk to people.
My friend (R2I guy) has set up a ad company. He sets up hoardings and displays ADs and makes revenues. He tells me that about 60-70% of hoardings in HYD are not legal. So the right way is pay GHMC licence fee, have the hoarding approved by a GHMC licenced structural engineer. THe wrong way is to just stick it wherever you want it, just pay the local GHMC guy some money. Even after GHMC notices it as illegal, they first issue a notice, and if you dont take it down they will send a group to remove it. Then you can sue GHMC, so the whole process takes upto 1 year, in the meanwhile you made 3 times the money.
GHMC doesnt care that hoarding made of welded iron without any structural testing is very unsafe and can fall on people's heads. MY friend is sure that this monsoon atleast 10 hoarding will come down.
Unbelievable.

Corruption at any level is deplorable. No one is condoning corruption here. But, impact wise corruption at grassroot level affects everyone more. That is the point. For example, higher level corruption/wrongdoings happens in developed nations as well. But, if you go to a police or RTO, or you want to get a gas connection, you don't need to pay bribe.

[/quote]Well, genuine businesses are corrupt big time. It is Ratan Tata and Anil Ambani dealing with Radia . Not Dawood Ibrahim. How much more genuine can a business be be than Tatas and Reliance in India? There is no evidence that licensing corruption has impacted the economy or businesses. Only public got looted. Again, I am not condoning corruption. Just an observation.
