Shipping via LCL or take it as checked in luggage

Post by BA2Hyd »

We are deciding between LCL of 500 lbs (60 CFT) via UniRelo for $1050 or just take 10 checked in bages of 50 lbs each on Emirates for $1400. It's the same stuff that we will be shipping, except for a 55 inch LED (via LCL) vs. 42 inch LCD (via check-in luggage).

The concern I have is customs at Hyderabad airport. Are they going to flip and want to charge customs duty on everything when two of us have 14 bags? Has anyone here taken similar amount of carry on and able to share your experience?

Not sure if it matters or not in customs, we aren't permanently going back - going on a long term assignment.

Thanks!

Customs would probably behave the same way, difference can be due to personalities.
Can you claim TR? If yes, you can do it with either LCL or check-in baggage.

For check-in baggage make sure that the airline is prepared accept it. A R2I, otherwise very honest and upright citizen, had to bribe to get the airline to accept the excess baggage.
Even that may be a valid action inorder to assimilate in the Indian ways.

I had taken a total of 10 suitcases. See my earlier post below.

farfromhome;352491R2i'ed on October 27th.

Jet Airways -- Newark to Chennai One way -- 1,991.40 (2 Adults + 1 6 year old Kid)

Took 10 suitcases. I told the check in counter guy that whether he would be able to take 10 suitcases (I've no issues paying for it), he said he had no issues as long I was willing to pay :)

Extra for 4 suitcases -- 150 * 4 = 600
Excess weight in 9 suitcases -- 9 * 50 = 450
Total = $1,050

In Chennai I was allowed to go through Green Channel. Didn't claim TR. The customs officer asked me to claim TR when my shipment arrived through sea (Universal) but there was nothing in my shipment which would've interested customs folks :).

See if they allow you to take 70 Lbs instead of 50 Lbs. You will reduce the no. of suitcases to be carried.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and feedback, very useful. Having packed soem of the stuff and visualizing what 10 suitcases would look like, I am going to go ahead and ship that stuff. I will report back on how it went.
