Satisfied with life, couple ends life in Goa

PANAJI: A young couple working in the IT industry committed suicide by hanging themselves at their residence in Merces, just outside Panaji. The decomposed bodies were found by Old Goa police on Thursday night after neighbours complained of a foul smell emerging from the flat.

Police suspect the couple-Anand, 39 and Deepa Ranthidevan, 36-from South India committed suicide three days ago. "They had checked out of a city-based 5-star resort, where they were staying for the last two months, on October 3," police said.

A suicide note in English, singed by the couple and dated October 3, states that the couple ended their lives of their own free will and no one should be held responsible or accountable for it.

The couple removed the ceiling fan in the drawing room and hanged themselves to a rope tied to the hook. "We suspect that they stood together on a stool and tied themselves with one end of the rope each and then pushed away the stool," police sources said.

The single-page suicide note, addressed to "whom it may concern", states, "We have lived a very eventful and happy life together. We've travelled the world, lived in different countries, made more money than we ever thought possible, and enjoyed spending as much of it as we could on things that brought us joy and satisfaction. We believe in the philosophy that our life belongs to us and only us, and we have the right to choose to die as much as we have the right to live."

The note further mentions that the couple leaves no liabilities or debts behind. There is a list of their properties, including a jointly-owned flat, attached to the suicide note. "They have also kept their last will and testament with respect to their belongings, duly signed by them," sources said.

The two have asked the finder of the suicide note to cremate their bodies in the government electrical crematorium after informing the families. "They have kept Rs 10,000 in cash in an envelope to be used towards expenses for cremation....," police sources said.

Police have sent the bodies for post-mortem to Goa medical college and hospital and intimated the relatives of the deceased. "They have said they are too old to travel and asked us to perform the last rites. We have asked them to give this in writing," police added.

This is wonderful. It takes a very evolved mindset to peacefully and voluntarily contemplate and execute suicide. Lives well lived and died, they are role models for thinking people everywhere.

How one can be satisfied and fulfilled with the life so soon, just because you made enough money and now have visited US, Canada, Russia and China, spent enough time and money for your own joy and happiness, and hence now you are done with it ? Seems, someone miserably failed to get the true meaning of L I F E !!

Are not there tons of other deeds to perform, goals to achive, noble work to offer towards the society,.. and duties towards yr own old parents, ans so much other responsibilities to attend... and for that even
if 'a cat' has nine lives, that's not even enough !

Look at the great men like Gandhi and Teresa or great scientists who gave smthg to the world, before they walked away from the face of earth !

What about the duty and responsibilities towards your elders / parents to pay their debt back ! A debt towards the society?

Shame on you ! Somebody kept you 9 months in their own stomach and fed you with their own blood,... raised you till you learnt walking, someone ploughed the field for you, to grow the corn for you

planes, trains, automobiles, cell, TV, amenities and what not ! What about those debts !

Had you invented any of such items by yourself ?? Hell No.
Someone spent their whole life behind those and hence you enjoyed those plane flights !!

I don't think they owe the world anything. How do you know that they haven't already given money to or otherwise helped their parents? You sound like you have a grudge against suicide. It's far from a copout you know. It's clear in this case they had no obvious need to escape, they chose to. And why not? I'd wager that their thought processes were far more rational and generally superior. They definitely didn't try to impose on or judge others, they could just as easily have gone out with a rampage, mass murdering hundreds of people.

This is such a tragedy. Poor souls were mis-guided and did not understand what happiness and a wholesome life is. Surely their happiness could not have been at the zenith when they knew the effect of their actions on near and dear ones.

I think, somehow I completely disagree with this ‘way of thinking’, this mentality and this philosophy of running for a debt free EXIT, just because you left 10K for your funeral expense and have no other debts hanging over. A person remains debt-ful from all the sides, a tons of debt to be paid towards the society for its services, parents, friends, relatives, teachers and all near and dear ones, directly or indirectly, knowingly or unknowingly. - Believe It! Admit it !
One is never debt-free if you gave it a thought, in a broader sense !
Moreover, killing itself is a crime, him or me-myself makes no difference.

Well, I disagree. Who said killing is a crime? Why must anyone accept it regardless of whoever said it? Based on what other than the monetary system can debt be measured? It's all very subjective. The way I see it, two intelligent and well informed persons made an unconventional decision for themselves and had the courage to execute it, which is commendable.
