Wanna restart my life - in US or India?

Post by restarting »

To followup on this thread,I went to india (mumbai), stayed there for 6 months and just returned back to states.
During this time unfortunately there was a sad news in my family,I lost my father as a result of heart failure, this was completely unexpected as my father was otherwise quite healthy. We had dinner together and father was just fine, he went to sleep and passed away in his sleep only, there was no sign of discomfort and docs say that mostly he didn?t feel any pain at all (silent heart attack). At least me and my brother(who also stays abroad) were there with Mom, god knows how we would have reacted if mom was alone there.

PS: I plan to share more thoughts on my india visit, but after above's message, will share it in next post.

To mention about the original intention for visit to india, I couldn?t visit any ashrams, I did visit couple of orphanages locally in mumbai.
This was the first time I was staying in india for this long as a local (after 11 long years in US).It was a great learning experience and quite different than what I could have imagined. Parameters of life are so vastly different, I wonder if it is even possible to compare the life in US and India.

When in mumbai, one of the biggest challenges for me was - lack of local social connections. That made getting things done a bit difficult. Things there seem to depend so much on word-of-mouth, references and connections (not a bad thing, just different from US, where for almost any of my questions I can just turn to web).

On a different note, there are so many real estate projects going on in Mumbai.....I visited the ?World One? building site, it is almost unbelievable, the scale at which they are planning for these projects. I was also surprised by the spending potential of people, there is Bentley showroom in mumbai, when I entered the showroom - I was like why/how/who, they said they sell one car a month!!

To reflect back, when I went to India, I thought I was a rich guy earning in $$ and returning home, when I was returning back, I realized that I am the poor guy who has to go abroad to earn money (and also grateful to have this opportunity to go abroad !!).

Hi Restart. You have not mentioned whether you are interested in teaching in school or college? If you are still in India I would recommend getting in touch with Pratham Foundation or Akanksha Foundation. They run volunteering programs for people interested in teaching underprivileged school-children. They both have good websites and are active in Bombay with lots of centres in different parts of the city. I am originally from Bombay, so I know that it can be a difficult city to build social networks. My recommendation would be to join something - may be a language class where you are more likely to meet other people of your age and background. Good luck!
