Shipment Lost in sea

Post by UniRelo »

One of our consolidation containers sailing on a "K" Line vessel was one among several others that were lost at Sea last month due to Typhoon Guchol. All customer's whose shipments were in that container have been personally informed by me and insurance claims have been filed for those who took insurance.

Unfortunately, calamities at sea are outside anyone's control, and although rare they can and do happen. It is estimated that an average of 10,000 containers are lost at sea each year. Although the number seems high it is a very small percentage when you put in perspective of 5 million containers that are in transit at any given point in time across the world. In our 15 years in business this was the first occurrence of a container lost at sea by a steamship line due to rough seas.

It is also true that stats do not help those who unfortunately lost their personal belongings. We are doing everything possible to work with our customers and get their claims processed expeditiously. We will also be refunding the destination portion of the shipping charges to all affected customers once claim processing is complete. Both Sai and I are personally involved with each claim to ensure top priority is given in assisting the affected customers.

A tragedy like this can happen to any ship as typhoons and hurricanes can happen anywhere, anytime. Just a couple years ago, two ships collided outside Mumbai port and several hundred containers fell into the sea. These are reasons as to why insurance is extremely important and also why it is important to not undervalue your shipment when insuring.

Shipment Lost in sea

I feel sorry for the people who may have lost their shipment because of the storm. Having gone through the process of shipping the household stuff, it is hard to imagine losing items that are close to your heart. More than the value, the memories associated with certain things make those items priceless & in-replaceable.

I investigated this incident because it seemed close to when our container was en-route to Mumbai. Based on the tracking information, our container reached Hong Kong on June 19th & the typhoon Guchol slammed the ocean near Hong Kong on June 20th. We got lucky by a day or two maybe. Hard to imagine that we could have got hit by this too. Following is a link to some pictures that shows how the typhoon Gulchol caused damage to one of the ships:

We also went with Universal Relocations and I'm confident that they will do everything for their customers.

Good luck !

This is the same fateful ship that was carrying our cargo.
