Stuck with R2I

Post by pbhagwat »

Hi All,

I am planning R2I this december and have been getting a lot of feedback from people. Mysituation as explained in one of the post is i have GC with 1.4 years done.. can apply for USC in 2016 but daughter is already 5 year old so plan to go forward with R2I adn surrender GC. The question i have is

1) Has anyone ever felt regret in surrendering GC and basically closing the door for R2A? What if your kids don't like it in a few years and want to go back? what if situation in India detoriates a lot (civil strife) and a lot of people move but we are not able to because no visa to US.. in those cases i feel our decision as parents to R2I is basically forcing the kid to give up his/her life in US.

Any thoughts comments appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi,

My suggestion to you is to get REP for now. This should allow you to stay out of the country for 2 years. In case you want to come back within that period, you could. I believe you can extend this one more time and get 2 more years.

Remember, you will still owe taxes to US govt as long as you hold GC. Do consult a tax consultant to evaluate you situation and advise you properly. Relinquishing GC should be no problem once you decide you want to stay put in India.

You are right. By 2050 India will have 2 billion people. There is no water or power for existing 1.2B, not sure where govt will find resources for additional 800m. Cities are getting overcrowded. Though there are lot of jobs but applicants are also more. I heard few years back INFY received 1 million applications. Get USC and then return. If things do take a turn for worse, then you can R2A. If UPA gets re-elected in 2014, then you should pack your bags and leave India.

Thanks,

I replied to yor earlier post here http://www.r2iclubforums.com/forums/showthread.php/28710-R2I-In-2014-with-7-year-old-kid-Can-i-put-hs-for-ier-in-std-1?p=464981#post464981
pasting below my reponse
[QUOTE]You have following options
1) Wait till you get USC and then R2I
2) Get REP of 2 years before you R2I
3) R2I and test waters for less than 6 months and then R2A or surrender your GC
You did not mentioned clearly your reasons of immediate R2I. If your reasons are of that intensity then I would go with option 2 above. Don't worry about kids they adjust well it is only we adults or providers who may face problem.
One more advise from experience - if you want to R2I do it and live with it. If you keep going back and coming back it is ery painful for every one in most respects (personal, financial, emotional etc.). In my opinion if you have a backup plan (USC/GC+REP) most probably one would come back so then question is why R2I to begin with.

If opposition wins, then you may not alive to R2A. People will die in communal riots.

Sorry for the hijack.
Don't R2I then no question of R2A arises.

Thanks,

Take USC and then try R2i....5 years vs 8 years of age for kid there wont be massive difference...but in that time frame having USC as indicated by other posts above will be a "life changer" for you and family.

Consider R2I only if you have strong reasons to WANT to be in India. And know what all you will be giving up (potential USC is one of them). Weigh it. Make a decision. And do not question it in hindsight.

If in the future you want to escape from India, you can fight your way out again as you did the first time. And there are more countries other than the US where you can head to.

I haven't regretted giving up GC - of course my R2I is only 2.5 yrs old.

Kids can chose their path as they wish to when they are adults.

Your daughter is still young. If i were you, i would stay put in US until citizenship. In 2016 when you R2I, she will be 9 years old and she shouldn't have much of a problem adjusting with Indian school system. Once you are firm about R2I, you can also arrange for your child to spend the summer time in India with grandparents or uncles & aunts. I have a 10 year old who will be going to 5th grade this year and he spends 3 months in India every summer, goes for second language(Tamil) and third language(Hindi) tuitions and is absolutely enjoying his stay. Our R2I is in 2013 when my son will be 11 years old and will be going to 6th grade.
