Arrear demand that was paid already

Hello,

I had arrear demand due to under payment tax for year 2005-2006. I paid this in full in the same year. Now in 2012, I got a letter from IT - Centralized processing center, demanding the same amount to be paid. Likely the update on amount paid got missed. Please suggest how to handle this.

Do you have copy of check, statement etc? If so, scan it, save it and call IRS up and talk to them on the phone about it and tell them that you can email the scanned copy right away to show the payment.

How did you pay?

If it is through a cheque deposited in a bank, there must be a deposit slip (challan) stamped and countersigned by the bank. That will be your proof of deposit.

I used the copy of the challan and cleared the due part. Thank you very much.
