NY times front page on North eastern Indian exodus

Todays NY times carried the article on exodus of people from the NE states fleeing Indian cities. This was covered in the front page as a lead article in the print version . I do not know how serious the situation is on the ground . But it shows how little faith the common man has in our law and order situation . It is sad to see such events that question our much touted diversity and harmony.

This event seems a stark reminder of how delicate and fragile our multiethnic/secular fabric is .I have a good understanding of the Bodo crisis but am surprised by the sudden turn of events on the ground in rest of India. Thoughts?

From all the news I read in online media (Indian as well as from US/UK) it seems to be really bad situation.
It seems that exodus of NE people from other states/cities is attributed to the rumor and hate SMSs.
And Govt is now blaming Pakistan (saying the source of these SMSs are in Pakistan). For some reason I do not believe the Pakistan angle.

I have always maintained this that with so many people, when shit hits the fan, it won't take much for any situation to turn into large scale chaos and mayhem. Hunger, poverty, so much disparity, all it needs is small trigger. Law and order is joke, when security officials can't make much difference , tendency is to give up. Also they get the same pagar whether they go and fight in the front or sit in a police van. Later one is safer than the former.

What is sad about it? Should the govt wait for something to happen so that big dynasty sycophants can come up with some punchlines alng the lines of "maut ka saudagar" that can be used in 2014? May be the BJP govt should have got some cues from the neighboring Cong govt that let a rally go berserk.

What is sad is your attempt to give a communal color to a govt action, not the govt action itself.

Only 5 SMS per is allowed as a precaution. As much as FB is teenage trend, SMS is no short, really it should have been banned long time back. These kids type text even while crossing busy intersection, standing on one leg in city bus or hanging on foot board.

Better in terms of taking precautionary measures. People who are going back have been told by the govt that their safety will be taken care.

The situation is bad but there is a lot of rumor mongering too. There was this rumor that the KA govt has arranged special trains to ferry people to Howrah. However, there were no such trains arranged. I heard in the news that the KA govt officials went to the railway stations in Blore to assuage the fears of fleeing people. Dont know how much success they have had but have read/heard reports of the exodus coming down in the past couple of days.

All said and done it is quite sad that the people have to leave everything and run one fine morning based on a rumor. Points to general sense of insecurity among people and the low confidence janata has in govts' ability to handle such situations.
