I heard most Desis are doctors. Then I heard most desis are in Motel business. Then I heard most desis own dunkin donuts and subways and then I heard 35% of Nasa scientists and 88.2% of microsoft engineers are desis.
Seriously, don't buy any rumors without credible data. You see when you go to India, say on a street corner in Bombay, you will find many desis begging, but you won't find desis begging in USA because only certain people can make it here. So you will find desis in many professions and in businesses and as a percent of all desis within USA, those percentages will look higher because only certain desis can make it to USA.

There are more desi people then ANY other community (except Chinese...but who cares about them...bleh)
I think lack of alternate entertainment options in India has helped producing lot more guys (and gals).
Why Desi people are in IT Field
Entry in IT is an escape from poverty/indian middle class, a semblance of financial independence. And why not if we can pull it off ? Only problem is certain indian cultures use nepotistic practices to hire in IT irrespective of the candidate's credentials or talent. I see that in other cultures too, but the extent is not as much as certain communities. Although, I must say in the end the desis hired through nepotistic practices pull it off. Then it just becomes a question of who get the entry.
Why Desi people are in IT Field
In our household there are no IT people. Our path to success wasn't easy and we survived on <30K in our initial years in US.
Educated Indians who immigrate from India are mostly in IT field since there is a huge demand for people with IT knowledge/skills and service industry in IT are very prevalent in India and have set up shops in US to cater to IT needs of most firms in US. They apply for H1-B in bulk and ship out people for onsite assignment who then move on to getting green card and settling here. But for any other sector, you need to come here as student and path isn't as straightforward/easy as for the IT sector. Take my hubby and his friends for example, they are in science and had to come here for phD or post doctoral fellowships. After years of struggle and years of experience, some of them are successful and transitioned into becoming university faculty or entered industry and others are still struggling. For other professions like doctors/nurse/dentist/lawyer/CPA etc etc you most often need to get re-certification or take new courses before embarking on journey to gain employment and grow gradually. The chance of someone getting a $100K job offer from NJ sitting in India is very rare in any other field! Offcourse there is almost no chance for Desis immigrating to US as firefighter/cop/school teacher etc...
But if you see 2nd generation Indians (kids born to these Desi immigrants), you see them getting into any profession of their liking.

Why Desi people are in IT Field
Many reasons:
1) More opportunities and decent pay
2) Abroad travel; possibility of living in a western world
3) Toilet paper making it look galmorous than it is calling them "techies", people love it
4) Better chances of finding a spouse
5) Last but not least - requires less creativity, just do the work that client dictates, no bheja frying. Suits us desis
:))
Looks like the clamor for management jobs (MBA qualified) has been replaced by IT.
