Just came to know today that my second grader is gifted and talented from letter from school district. They tested the kid few month ago and selection is based upon few tests. We were not aware of these tests and no preparation was done. Kid is good in study and always get A+ without any home study/Kumon etc.
School is greatschools 10 rating and excellent test result/state rank School (and school district) with almost 90% Asians.
Letter says that school will provide additional classes for kids from 3rd grade to 5th grade.
How good is this program/test? Since kid got selected without any effort, do I have to do anything or provide some resources/classes that will helpful? It would be really helpful by listening some parents who gone thru this.

My kid is in gifted and talented in both math and language arts and we were just talking about the same topic and saw this thread. Just like yours, my kid never got any prep at home nor took any other classes. We got to know about CogAT testing only after my kid got selected. It runs from 3rd grade to 5th grade. My kid used to attend those classes in 2nd grade itself and we got to know about it only at the end of second grade as our kid never mentioned about it at home and school didn't send us any info that time.
You don't have to do anything. Your kid will attend G & T classes once a week during regular school time. Sometimes your kid might need some help with the home work, just some guidance and that's about it.

Hello
Great to see a thread already rolling on this thing. I rec'd a letter from the district around a month ago that my son did appear for a Cogat test and looking over the results I found out that he did excellent in math and some other subjects but was left out by 2% on the non-verbal testing .
First of all- I'm not sure why we never told of this test earlier (or maybe the school district wanted to keep it that way ..who knows) and secondly - I did some research and found that there is a Cogat exam this november while he is in 3rd grade . I'm not sure if we want him to take the test or not but if we enroll him - is there a book he should work with ? Like a CoGAT 3rd grade book or something for non verbal reasoning ....
Just wanted to find out ....Any inputs will be welcome ...
