A Journey of (8) thousand miles!

Post by cruisingthoughts »

Someone rightly said ? A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Along the same thoughts I have started my r2i with a few small steps (opening up an r2i account after years of reading without contributions being one of them!).

About myself ? Schooling in Chennai ? College/Partied in Coimbatore ?-> Infy ?asters in USA? Married in 2010.. Wait.. That?s not what I would say about myself.. dreamer.. passionate about endless things.. like stocks, poker, cloud computing!.. wanting to start/run a business in India..

Why this post? One of the best ways to think and plan is to write it down urself! Hence thought of sharing my next steps.. reasons behind certain decisions..get feedback for my plans and ventures and most importantly.. meet and chat with people who have a similar interest/mindset.

Where am I in the R2i? Well as the title says.. got a long way to go. I have decided but Still have to convince my wife :e! That should put things in perspective

Finally.. why did I post this is in Diaries if I have not even started my r2i process! I did not want to start a thread in ?Dilemma? section coz I don?t have one.. not in ?Planning? section coz it is mostly for people who are shipping things to India and I dint want to lose this blog in that section.. So why not start the Blog in the section where I hope it would end..

Stay tuned! The postings need not be purely about r2i.. lots of interesting conversations and things to discuss!
Finally.. anything and everything I post here are just MY cruising thoughts! No intention to offend anyone or start an argument!

Why R2i?
I always try to answer the most important question “Why” before I do anything. In this case, the whole spark of R2i started when I could not answer the most important question.
It was year 2000 when I left my house and Chennai for the first time to pursue my engineering.. My mom was in tears.. I knew why I was leaving the house.. there was a purpose to it..
After all these years.. my mom still has tears in her eyes every time I leave for the Airport.. but over the years.. sitting at the Chennai Airport waiting for my Qatar flight.. I could not clearly answer why I am leaving this time.. It was not the case the first time I left for USA.. or the second .. but the WHY faded away over years and the last time I was there at the airport.. the Why box was totally empty!
I began to forward time and thought what if everything went well. I would probably get a GC in another 5 years (PD date is 2011 and even 5 is optimistic!).. USC in another 5.. couple of job switches.. bigger house.. better car.. one fine day when I retire.. finally whatever the end result was.. I thought.. That is not what I want.. That is not what I want to be.. this sparked my r2i thoughts!

Very well put. But beware, there's a chance "what I want to be" might change in future once you R2I. But you go to do what you strongly feel today, that's living! All the best.

Your "Why" thoughts reminded me of this Ted Talk:

True IluvHyd! But I certainly think "where I want to be" at this point is kinda clear to me. Even that might change :)!

The "why" happens due the combo of following.

1. Parental conditioning and bonds, you see their age is a one way process every time you go they get older weaker blinder and deafer.

2. Your existing peer group, realize Many of them are their for the exchange rate, they are hardly doing anything other than cutting coupons and waiting for the weekend potluck party.

3. Mind numbing conversations, in the weekend parties in USA, things will range from how to get all inclusive cruise in Alaska to latest Black Friday exploits.

4. Your own midlife crisis, slow green card( that is Americas form of sophisticated slavery so that you work for same master), sameness of the whole life, lack new and exciting goals, life is too automated.

I was there 7 years ago, then u either pick up a good hobby and get on with it, or return to India and have a blast. You have one life, just one, either you continue bean counting or be on of the 10 percent of desi's who wNt to give new things a chance is your choice.
