Why some people act like Chelas/Chamchas(sycophants) even though they are smart?

Post by RBee »

You see this in office/real life/family gatherings etc..

Some of these people are smart, accomplished and have no need to be groupie but they act like mouth pieces of few people..
In Hindi, we call them Chelas/Chamchas.. In English , equivalent word is sycophant or groupie, not sure..

The people whom they defend are capable of defending themselves but these chelas/chamchas act as mediator even when not necessary..

I find it strange that an Indian is asking this question. India has always been a swamin-bhrtya society. The strong have always looked after the weak here or they are supposed to anyway. The weak in turn offer them their services and sing their praises. This is dismissively referred to as "chamchagiri". We see this in families, in workplaces and in real life. This is the dharma of India. The dharma of the West is that everybody is equal and everybody looks after themselves (with the aid of the State of course). You should have an intuitive grasp of this (and you most likely do) but you are being made to spout a discourse that is not really your own because of your superficial exposure to the West.

Are you claiming that no one helps another in the west.
That may be true for usa about which I know nothing. UK has always had the old boy network as well as the god-father (not like in usa) concept.

I think that I had read some where that the lobbyist look after some people, but my memory must be playing tricks in view of your statement.

This thread was meant for serious responses but people treated it lightly while below thread was to just evoke funny responses but people took it really serious... Weird :)

Yes, humans are very unpredictable. They shan't do what you ask of them. They shall do what they want.

I gave a serious answer in this thread and a silly answer in the other (which is what you asked).

The answers are self-evident though. We act like chamchas because we need protection and are attracted to wealth and power. We visit each other's profiles because we are curious about each other so that we may decide to whom we must do chamchagiri towards and whom we must make our chamchas.

If you want to learn about the evolution of chamchagiri in India, I can direct you towards a good book on the subject.

High level design and development discussion mtg at company involving architects, tech leads and upper mgmt..
To come to this stage, each one should have certain level of technical expertise and domain knowledge.. but still some are fiercely independent and don't budge to mgmt's short corners but few people's chamchagiri is evident...

So that means not all are attracted to wealth and power..

Unrelated but do you post as Umang with additional 'a' elsewhere :) ?
