Need opion- Returning to India in middle school

Post by Ilovemumbai77 »

Hi everyone,

My family has spent about 7 years living in USA, but we feel like returning home. The problem is my son starts 7th grade this fall and for him learning to write new languages in India seems very difficult at this stage. I would appreciate anyone in a similar situation sharing their experiences- anyone who has attempted R2I it with middle school kids.Any input is appreciated.

Regards.

First find a strong reason why you want to R2I, without this you wont R2I.

I lived almost 20Yrs and returned to Chennai with middle school Kid. No issues at all settling or School , Kids adapt very quick. Only factors that helped was I visited Chennai every year so was used to the Indian ....and I have my ways of getting things done.

BTW I dont work in India now nor do I intend to.:p

OP,

As parents, it's in our DNA to worry about our wards. However each person's experience and perspective is unique, so be your own judge. If you really want (and not just wish) to R2I, then you will instinctively find ways to overcome the obstacles too. If one is really motivated, then one would go to any lengths to achieve the goal - that's human nature. You have identified one pain point - language adaptation of your son; research on this and you might find good schools that offer easy second language options. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for your inputs. Yes I agree that as parents it's natural for us to worry, but a person who is determined will find a way out. We are here in India for 2 months and I will be speaking to a few schools regarding his admission. I don't want to regret not having tried. Even a single example of a successful attempt gives me a ray of hope. Being in the 'in-between' situation feels horrible :(

Can't you send him to an international school? Don't get involved with the Indian system. It shall suck the life out of your child. I have heard Mercedes-Benz International School in Pune is quite good.

If it will be of any solace to you, we returned with a high school daughter. She joined 9th grade in India and it's 4 years now. She has graduated from high school this year and has secured admission in a good university. She will be pursuing her undergrad in India. It was not an easy transition and she has had her fair share of struggles. But at the end of 4 years, she has learnt a lot in terms of life lessons.

There are quite a few members on this forum who have returned with middle school kids and they have been pretty successful. However, don't expect a path of roses. There will be struggles, heart aches, tears and frayed nerves. Just stay focused and things will slowly fall in place.

Hi lively

I assume your daughter must be an OCI, did you have any issues with her joining university in terms of nationality etc. was she considered as local candidate

Good to hear that Lively! Definitely builds hope.
Umang, I really wish we could send him to an Iternational school where language would not be an issue, but frankly speaking, we cannot afford to spend that much- I am guessing it would cost at least 6-7 lakhs p.a- more but not less.
At the most what we can manage is upto 3 lakhs...that too just to buy him time to pick up the language for a year. I would need to look for an ICSE school that would offer him French as 2nd ...but he will still need to have the regional language as his 3rd. I go crazy thinking about all this because we really WANT to move. My younger one is a USC, but he is just 6 years old- so he will relatively be better off adjusting than his brother.

I will keep this thread updated with any significant developments from our side.
Thanks to everyone again.

The university that she applied to is very savvy. Right in the beginning of the application form, they ask for nationality. If you choose USA (or any foreign nationality), then the applicant is automatically bracketed in the Foreign national/NRI category. Hence we didn't have to go the route of 'local candidate with OCI card' etc.
