Is anyone considering or currently living in Hybrid r2i

My situation is the following:
my wife and I are 51 years old and have lived in the US (East Coast) for 26 years.
our daughter is in college and son is in high school and will leave for college in 2 years.

i briefly contemplated r2i 15 years ago, however my wife was not keen and we decided to stay.

our Financial position is quite good and we can afford to retire either in the US or in India anytime.

We would like to consider a hybrid r2i in 2 years with 5-6 months in India (Delhi or Bangalore) and the rest of the time in the year in the US.

I have been working in Executive Management roles for the last 10 years. I think that I can keep myself occupied with part time Consulting jobs. Both my wife and I have OCI cards.

Has anyone considered hybrid r2i?

OP provide some more context. From what you described looks like your kids are all born and raised in US. Whats the primary motivation of hybrid R2i?

Its a good idea but imho you will need a different plan of action. If you are in IT any senior position will be half India / Half US (if clients / target market is US, which it is for 50-60% of roles). If not in IT then mention your area of specialization and others can comment on it.

Executive Management roles as part time consultant in IT are not as easy as lower or higher levels. To be effective you will need rapport with key decision makers and have a loyal and efficient working team which you developed. All that takes due time and diligence. At lower level your role is easy to go in to and out of, and at higher level you can be corporate coach or "strategic advisor to CEO" kind of roles.

I know a friend who is doing this right now. The couple took retirement a few years ego and have been spending the winter months (Nov - April/may) in India and then the rest here. They own a fully paid home both here and back in India and are both retired (no consulting/part time roles). They are enjoying it as far as I know.
My hubby and I have the same plans for our future. We are no where near retirement, but when we do reach that stage and our kids are out bound, we plan on spending time both here and in India (in a tier II city).
If you are financially good, then why continue working? Even if you are considering consulting, my suggestion is that you do it when you are in US. Then you can retire in a calm/peaceful tier II city instead of bangalore/Delhi. If you take out job and big city from the equation, retiring part time in India can be a very good experience in my opinion.

This is a great idea, something I am thinking about too for future, but not ready to execute yet due to job / kids.

OP - do you have a home base in india where you will stay for 6 months? It will be good to have one. that will keep you motivated to go.
Obviously, that will depend upon your family etc. where they are in india.

If financially, you can invest in a mid-price home (can get it in the outskirts of the city), you can have best of both worlds

Keep in mind how will you manage health insurance requirements of US after quitting

I am hoping to do this as well. In fact I have a name for it which I should patent - Diwali to Holi is what I call it. Best of both worlds. Still far from retirement, but hoping to do it at least for a few years \ a decade

Thank you all for your responses and comments.

It is good to note that others are considering/living the hybrid r2i model. The primary motivation factors for spending a few months in India either Delhi or Bangalore during the winter months is that I grew up in Delhi, my wife grew up in Bangalore and we still have several friends from school/under-grad days living in both cities and we feel that it will be enjoyable to reconnect. The other very important point is that my parents are still alive and live in a Tier 2 city and I would like to be available for them as long as necessary and as much as they need us.

We will spend the rest of the year in the US (my parents health permitting) to be near our children since it is unlikely that they will live in India in the future for an extended period of time.

Frankly, I have not given much thought to the work aspect in this hybrid model. It could be consulting or non-profit work - whatever keeps us engaged and where we can add some value. Health Insurance is also something to consider (as pointed by FB2020) and we could purchase private health Insurance.

I am thinking of a similar model. I am not counting on making money from work. It maybe mostly non profit or something I can work from home with very low investment (building an app or website etc).

My motivation for India is most of my extended family members live there.......motivation to come back to USA will be when I cant take the pain over there anymore :) or I feel the need to earn some money for my extended family members (since my savings can only take care of my expenses, I wont be able to use it to help others much)

I live in south USA, so winter is a non issue. In fact July and August are terrible since its extremely hot and outdoor life becomes limited.

Since I am still hands on, I may pursue short term contract positions in USA to get some extra bucks......not counting on it though.

Don't count on old friends in any r2i plans. You'll find not much in common after the initial euphoria/nostalgia. You'll certainly make lot of new friends.

Let me join the like-minded folks here. Yes this is my retirement plan as well. Too early for me however, I am consolidating my real-estate in the tier II city where my parents currently live. I plan to retire there. My Sis family, my parents and my wife's family are all living in that tier II city. The only challenge is going to be staying away from kids even for six months. All my life along I stayed away from my parents (boarding school, job, LIA etc.,) now a future where I would be away from my kids and their families? Well that is the ONLY show-stopper rest this is the go-to plan :). Wish list - have a two story built and rent or let parents live one of the floors (they have a home already), pick a hobby like music, gardening etc., visit places of interest, build a facility for meditation ... the free spirited mind just wants to keep going on... until it is reminded that we only have that much time and resources and the best thing to do is live here right now in this moment :D
