MT: Person of India origin (PIO) card discussion

Has anyone applied for PIO card in the Indian Consulate Houston?
I will be sending the documents via post from Dallas to Houston.

Both me and my wife are Green card holders with Indian Citizenship. We are applying for PIO card for our daughter who is 6 yrs old and has an U.S passport.

I have a few questions.
What originals do we need to send apart from the Child's U.S passport?
Regarding copies we are planning to send copies of our passport, birth certificates,green card, drivers license, utility bill, childs passport and birth certificate. Do we need to notarize the copies and is there anyother document copy we need to send?

We recently applied for PIO cards for our sons, you don't need to notarize any documents, just the copies are sufficient. Since we live in Houston, we didn't submit their passports either, they will need them when we pick-up the PIO cards I think. Just make sure to include your child's birth certificate to prove that you are the parents and also you need to submit copies of your Indian Passport to prove the origin...

why would any one apply for PIO, instead of OCI ? I am just curious..
is there a benefit ?

If one of the parent is an USC then the child can apply for OCI. If both parents hold Indian passport, then we can apply only for PIO now and later when the child turns 18+, he/she can apply for OCI. As our dependent, one of the parents has to be dependent for us to apply for OCI.
That is the only reason. Otherwise we would have applied for OCI only.

I applied for PIO in Canada. My experience here has been lot less traumatic than some of you guys experienced in Houston. It took one week to get the card plus they verified all originals (canadian passport, indian passports, thats it) and kept copies. I applied for PIO as it took only a week and OCI here takes about 5 months. But once you get the PIO, they say you can upgrade it to OCI for $ 40 and it takes less time.

I could think of one reason but there could be others. If you are a US citizen and intend to apply for a Security clearance one of the questions on the form is do you hold a dual citizenship of any other country. I heard holding a dual citizenship makes it difficult to get the security clearance for DoD, Homeland Security etc jobs - if not out right impossible. There is no column for PIO and Technically you are not required to disclose it.

Based on our current USC processing in SFO, we will probably have couple of weeks to get passport and Indian Visa / PIO card.

As a USC you can not work in India without PIO/OCI, so it is must

How about getting an Entry Visa? Will that permit working from India?

I am a USC in similar boat -- need to get a visa that permits work in India within a couple of weeks. Not sure how much time SFO consulate takes to process PIO cards these days.

To work from India you need an OCI card or a PIO card or an employment visa.
