Delhi's LG Statement

Post by be_happy »

Here is what Delhi's LG said -

"In this region, the situation is such that commonly it is a matter of pride to violate the law. The behaviour pattern in South India is such that the people naturally stay within the limits of the law,"

"It is a speciality of Northwest India that the people feel a sense of honour and pride in violating law and boasting that no action has been taken against them,"

What you all think of his statement?

I have also noticed and experience the same and btw I am from North India and people (especially in Delhi) brazenly breaks the laws - jumping red light, not following the traffic rules etc. This pattern is irrespective of age and gender. This might be the case on other cities also but it is much less in southern cities.

The Lt. Guv probably hasnt been to the South much, I guess. All over India, we brazenly flout all laws: road, construction, government, etc. Why single out the poor North and Western Indians? Perhaps, he forgot the media's favorite whiping boy: Lawless Bihar?

Dont forget we were early adopters of civil disobedience. It will take a few generations to get rid of that hangover.

Agree! We are very much united and compete with each other on these things.

BTW, have you lived in North India? It is a much more serios situation there.

One day I was in a hurry to go to the Delhi railway station because I was late for the train. When I told the taxi driver that I am in a hurry to catch the train he said, "Sir, don't worry. Rs.100 is the fine for jumping the red light. So you keep a hundred rupee note in your hand ready and I will jump all the red lights. If the police catches us just tell him, here is your fine, leave us, we are in a hurry":)

When I was in Gurgaon somebody stole my RC book for my car. I went to the RTO office in Gurgaon. The guy there said that he does not have old records about the RC book because everything was lost in a fire accident. Then he asked me to go to Maruti Vendor to get some certificate as proof of the sale of the car ( I bought the car second hand). I went to the Maruti vendor and he said he lost all the records in a fire accident. I went nuts. Why there is fire accident every where. Later I came to know that the corrupt employees make some fake fire accidents to destroy trace of their wrongdoing. Then I paid money to this RTO guy and he made an RC book in no time. He gave it to me as though he is doing me a great favor and he mentioned to me that in South India nobody will be helping me like he did there. The whole thing was very interesting.

I agree we are indeed united on this count. For what its worth, India Today does a kind of ranking of states every year...not sure how scientific it is. The rankings in recent times show states from both the North and South figuring prominently as the better law & order states: http://www.indiatoday.com/itoday/20050815/grfx/2b.gif

More info on how they do the ranking here: http://www.indiatoday.com/itoday/20060911/cover.html&SET=T
