I have been discussing an with an MNC in India . They have not given me a firmed up offer .What they say is that they got a deal with a US company and want me to join in 1-2 weeks time . My current company needs atleast two weeks notice and as you all know it is hard to reallocate in such a short notice. I am in a dilema ,please advice

What time period will your current company give before laying you off? Most big companies generally give few minutes. You can do the same. You are not required to give any notice. But be careful in burning bridges for future purpose.

If you do not have a offer, you do not have a job. Be very careful before resigning.

Do you have to relocate to India or US or within city/country?

I would ask for more time to join mentioning that you need to do proper handover/knowledge transfer. You can start with a good impression that way (or else they might think that if you can quit your current company in a day, why not us?).

I need to reallocate to India. I know a friend who used to work for the Indian MNC that they need 3 months notice and they won't relive people before that .So I am not sure why they are asking 1-2 weeks . Can we negotiate anything ?. Also since the client is in US , may be I can start work here ( remotely ,I do not live in the same location as the US client ) and then move to India with in 2 -3 month time. Does that sound a good option I put forward to the company. Any other points ?

Why smaller font now? It shows your low self-confidence. Just kidding :)

Had you given a time-frame to the prospective employer before you started interviewing with them?

You can start preparing for the move now... you must have already started. Don't resign yet. Do your research, and find out what's the earliest date you can move to India. If the company pays for relocation (packers/movers), can that date be earlier? Find that out.

When the company comes with an offer, you can tell them the date you are comfortable with. Working from US is a good idea too. But be prepared to go on client side. I do not think an Indian company will allow you to work remotely in the first month of the job.

Best luck!

Thanks Gurusw. The font was when I tried to reply from a Blackberry browser. I think R2i need to be more mobile friendly website :) . Yes, I am willing to Client site ( which I proposed) which is around 1.5 hours flight from my home .Hopefully I can fly back over the weekends to help my family. Never worked on a Indian company on site. So they pay me the Salary and India and pay for the expenses at the client site ?. Can I negotiate that ? . The client site proposal came from me , so I think I cannot negotiate further. This will be ( hopefully) a temporary arrangement until I settle my things here ( 1-2 Months time frame)
