Passport renewal and visa at Indian consulate in NY

Post by ana »

Hi Everyone,
I want to apply for my passport renewal and also for my son's visa at NY consulate. Do you have any idea about how long both these things take?

I am travelling to India end of May, so don't have much time to get it done.
If we go in person, do we get it the same day?

Please share whatever information you have. like supoorting document, yr personal experience.

Thanks,
Ana.

I am not sure about the time it takes in Newyork. In chicago, it takes 15 days to get a new passport. The documents required are stated in the website. Here is the link for newyork consulate.

By personal experience, I'd suggest that you don't completely relay on the website (it is usually outdated :emangry:). For instance, when I got my renewal done a couple of years back the website mentioned the need of 2 Passport sized photos. I religiously sent 2 photos and promptly got a call from the consulate (the voicemail sounded as though the person was irritated - I'll not blame him for most of all the people like me had sent 2 photos short and it was his responsibility to call, inform and convince the applicants to send 2 more photos. Not to mention hear all the non-sense from people who wanted to know why the website was outdated and the consequent blame game.) requesting me to send the required additional photos. Apart from that, the process was real cool. The guys seem to be pretty methodical in what they do.

By the way, I called over half a dozen times to reach somebody higher up to air my frustration and opinion at the outdated website. I finally reached an Asst. Consulate General (I think?) who sounded courteous and seemed to take a note of the need for the website to be updated on a regular basis - I'd still be skeptical about it.

No matter what anybody and anything says/indicates...an individual is responsible for certain things - passport happens to be one of them. -DJ

For both passport and VISA, If you go in person and apply before 11.00AM, you can get them same day in the evening.

For your Son's VISA, they also have camps in some cities where you can get the VISA same day.(Note that VISA camps are only for VISA's for US Citizens NOT for Passport renewels)
