Voice Message hacking scandal in UK

Had been reading and watching about this scandal. Watched the testimony of Murdochs yesterday and could not help but think that they tried to escape feigning ignorance.

While the press in UK invades privacy of celebrities all the time, this time around the hacking of the voice message of a school girl who went missing and was found murdered has precipitated an outrage that has become difficult for NEWS CORP to contain. Will this change the paparazzi-style reporting by UK tabloids?

There are speculations that 9/11 victims in US could have also been targetted by NEWS Corp and is being investigated by the FBI.

Murdoch Sr. probably thinks this is all a conspiracy to thwart his bid to buy a controlling stake in BSkyB.

INteresting to note that there is not much interest in this subject.

To me it was fascinating to see Murdochs brought down to their knees for hacking common people's phones and using it to make tabloid stories. Given the corporotisation of the media that is happening in India today, there is possibility of something similar taking place in India too. How protected are people here from snooping? Case in point is the Radia-gate. If calls of such powerful people can be intercepted, what about the common man? Are the media houses involved in such interceptions to create such stories and increase their TRP?

Yes, the not much interest is interesting. I followed the news.. hard to miss since it is headlines in CNN, but couldn't relate to a scandal oceans away, I guess. I did find the instance of the teen girl's voicemail being hacked and giving her family false hope heartbreaking. The arrest of the female executive who went expecting only to talk to the police, was of interest to me, but only because of gender. : )

Very much a possibility that it happens in India also. And yes, it is gratifying to see the mighty brought to justice for hacking phone's on this scale.

This lighter and more colorful incident has captured everyone's attention alright, and it is a fun read, but looks like too much is being made out of it. From the above link:

"That's our Wendi," said Vanity Fair writer Michael Wolff, author of a Murdoch biography.

"She is great -- incredibly full of energy, incredibly intelligent, living the life and just squeezing everything out of it," he said. "She is incredibly ambitious."

Please!

The shaving cream pie thing reminds me of the Iraqi journalist who threw a shoe at Bush that he dodged. :)

I thought it would be of interest to people bcoz of the alleged 9/11 connection to it. It may not be too long before it ceases remaining "oceans away" story.

Plus, there are quite a few R2Ied people form UK. Thought they also may have a perspective on it.

Good Question. Are they all surreptitious?
