I watched the movie "Angadi Theru" from the local library. Surprised to see that the library is carrying new (relatively) movies. I liked the movie for the bold attempt by the director with the theme.

What happened to AR Rahman? Has he completely deserted Tamil? Nowadays, I am starting to like Harris Jayaraj (Hope billyblue is not reading this :-)

I like Angadi theru as well - it's a bold attempt and very touching movie. So was Engayum Eppothum. Music wise, I liked the background score and couple of songs from Yuvan's Mangatha. 7am Arivu from Harris is a let down for me.

Angadi theru was good. We all kind of knew about the bad working conditions, but this one changes the whole outlook. And that actress Anjali is so talented - especially, the scene where she shows disgust at the cowardice of her lover, without speaking a word. I liked her performance in Katradhu Tamil, but Jeeva took the cake in that movie. She wasn't left much but for "Nejamathan solraya?" (Are you telling the truth? - a repetitive dialogue that runs through the movie and is really touching in the climax).

Has anyone seen Azhagarsamiyin Kuthirai! :love: Wow, I loved the movie. :love:
Such a refreshing change among the sea of recent Tamil movies that have jarring climax(mostly with something terrible happening to the key characters).

Let me start with the first movie review. We saw 7 Aam Arivu (7th sense) over the weekend in the Bay Area. No, the plot is not about the protagonist seeing 7 times more ghosts than the little boy in Night Shyamalan's 6th sense. It is about how centuries ago, martial arts were introduced the very first time to Chinese by a man named Bhodidharma from 'namma vur' (Kanchipuram) and how Shaolin Monastery (and the subsquent numerous kung fu movies) all started.

I can go on and on, this movie takes 'male cow droppings' to new levels. :)

I did learn quite a few things from the movie which I must share or I will reel under the wrath of chinese gods:

1. Kung fu and the Shaolin legendary all started in Kanchipuram near Chennai after all, Wow!!!. We should claim royalty for all those chinese movies in the 80s, Shaolin Monk, Drunken Monk, Drunken Shaolin Monk, Snake in the Monkey's Shadow and may be even the more recent Kung Fu Panda movie. Can you believe it all started in Kanchipuram? ... Well according to the director Murugadoss, it did, and how is he able to convince? Read on ...

2. Script writers have found an excellent tool to let their most outlandish movie scripts pass unquestioned for authenticity. That tool is our beloved wikipedia and it's benevolence in letting anyone edit public information. The end result, movie script writers have started using wikipedia pages to directly record movie scripts and in turn use the same pages as references in the actual movie, so unsuspecting movie goers won't question the credibility of the storylines. Skeptics can check that wikipedia page's history between 2008 and current and how much "additional" information has been added to the page till the movie release. How can suddenly so much information be discovered and populated about this person Bhodidharma, about whom we already had very little information to begin with ?

3. Besides discovering Shruti Haasan (Kamal's best creation so far and he definitely deserves Oscar, Grammy and even the miss universe for this one) being the hottest new entry in Indian films and Surya is still maintaining his six packs after Vaaranam Ayiram, we also discovered that DNA of a dead person who lived gazillion years ago still carries "memories" of that person, all of which can be invoked in some one born generations later (DNA pattern ok, but memories? come on now) and all this "technology" can be documented in a 200 page book, containing information, smaller than an average Kindle download. I am stupified, to say the least... And one more, I didn't know the IIT campus in Adyar, Chennai had all the infastructure to bring these unique ancestral DNA properties (and memories from those DNAs) out of someone within 12 days including super advanced software and cryo tanks to support such a transition. Gosh, if I had only known, I would have slogged for another 2-3 hours every day with Agarwal and YG files back in those days to get into this IIT.

4. The telugu version of the movie was $3 cheaper than the Tamil version and both versions had subtitles and given Shruti and other's Tamil accents, wondering why I picked the Tamil version.

5. The samosas and paneer rolls at big cinemas were expensive but a tad worthier than the movie. :)

6. There was ample parking behind Big Cinemas, why were people people scrambling around for parking spots? :confused:

7. This one added later for Sai. I heard from the ladies in the movie hall that the Dong Lee guy was better than Surya :10:

and :emcrook: my dad could do the same too with Tamil, Tamilians and TamilNadu - Dint you know we are the founding fathers of almost everything in this world. My dad will be so happy that finally someone proved his theory :p

I saw the movie 7am arivu just a few minutes ago. Rather than analyzing at the storyline, I marveled the movie for coming up something different than the usual masala crap that Tamil cinema is so notoriously famous for. Don't get me wrong, this movie still had some small amounts of masala.Even if it is a slamdunk fiction, it was refreshingly different from the same old Vijay punch dialogue crap and people running around with arivaal (sickles).
If people appreciated the unrealistic flying human tricks in Crouching Tiger then this should be appreciated for that too.

Shruti Haasan is still a long way from being a good actress but for a newcomer, I would say - not bad!

I heard Vijay's Velayudham was actually good and different from his usual crap. In fact I tried to sneak into the other screen showing Vijay movie after the interval, but the security guy was watching and so came back to watch rest of 7 am arivu :) Harris tried to help with his incredible background music, but Murugadoss could not completely leverage that. Shankar was able to take advantage of this talent of Harris in Anniyan. The first few scenes of 7 am arivu was very well taken and raised expectations greatly, but by introducing martial arts along with an epidemic in the plot, the director lost focus. The director could have chosen one or the other. Too much to handle for him. Some scenes were sema izhuvai types. I wanted to scream at many places "Ok we get the point, just move on to the next scene", but there were a group of youngsters who screamed on my behalf.

Yeah, a friend of mine said the same about Velayudham too. Need to see it to believe it.

I so much yearn for a movie like Nayagan to be remade or even something like Taare zameen par. Its been years since Tamil cinema gave us a nice thought provoking movie.

Also, we need to go a long way in terms of comedy. Goundamani, Vivek and now Santhanam are all good but need a good director!
