We all hold onto hatred and grudge for what we perceive as injustice to us..
But in a longer run, this grudge/hatred affects us more than anyone..
So use today as get-it-off day!!

I only forget things with time and when they become less relevant to me. Though, I rarely forgive something which I seriously disliked. I Never forgive such people But if they come to me for advice/help, I won't wrong them.
I don't keep grudge/hatred But I only feel righteous anger at wrong doers, I know I won't forgive them on the day it would matter most. Though everyone is too afraid to offend me these days, But there was a time when I was vulnerable and people wronged me.

I do not have an answer to your question,but I think about this quite often. Human existence is beset by pain and suffering, a significant portion of which we inflict up on others and ourselves. Siblings cheated of property, spouses hit by abuse and or infidelity, children abused by people whom they trust, abandoned parents and on a larger scale survivors of genocide, rape each one of us need to let go, pick up the pieces and move on .The darwinian puppet dance orchestrated by our lizard brains is the baseline . The altruistic ,selfless empathetic behavior is the exception that makes life bearable like the light from an obscure ball of fire makes life possible/ bearable in the otherwise cold ,dark universe at baseline.Remembering this might help us appreciate the noble/selfless acts rather than get upset at the survival of fittest motions we go through every day. The key is to appreciate the love and warmth in the world recognizing our immense capacity for evil without giving into the nihilistic view of world
To a certain extent Viktor Frankl's timeless reminder that though we do not have power over the circumstances, we always have power over our responses helps quite a bit. The power to choose our response is the last of human freedoms which cannot be taken away from us .
The ability to forgive others is important , but the ability to forgive our own imperfect self is paramount. It is easier to forgive others than forgiving our imperfect self. Recognizing the beauty and beast within is vital. In ability to do so leads to shame , guilt , suicides either abrupt or slow in form of eating or drinking to death .Everything begins at home
One of my favorite poetry pieces ends with these lines --
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.

Max Ehrmann's Desiderata
Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.

That sounds too short term of an assessment. The likes of Steven Pinker are saying historically, the world is getting better. I agree with him.
