india income tax - compliance portal

Post by gotitnotice »

I am an NRI with no income in india. I received a non-filing of income tax notice after purchasing a property in india. I submitted a e-verification response on the compliance portal but even after two months, its still in "Submitted" Status and hasnt been acknowledged. I subsequently got a very stern sounding letter from Income tax department about the same non-filing of tax return. I have opened a ticket on compliance portal as well as emailed the email address of the international tax officer on the letter that I got saying my response isnt being acknowledged. However even after a week, there is no response to either the ticket or from the income tax officer. Please help. What should I do next?

The letter also asked me to "submit a copy of the acknowledgement to their office within 20 days". If the status of my submission in compliance portal stays at "submitted" without any acknowledgement number, what am I supposed to do?

Thanks in advance for any guidance you can provide.

Without particulars, it is hard to state but one thing to check.... the IT notice on the portal may have some related individual clarifications that need to be also submitted. Just responding to main question may not be enough. There can be more than one such clarifying sub-questions. If you do have such sub-questions, then, there is a specific way / format to answer these. There is a job aid for that and I would recommend that you read twice in a quiet place, think about it and then read it again before replying to queries. Not that it is hard, by nature, it is situation specific and those can "look" overlapping.

The "submitted" replies do not get acknowledgement number - at least I don't think so. However, you can call CPC help desk number and validate your concern - if you have verified that you have answered all related sub-questions OR no such sub-questions exists. CPC has good hours of operation coverage and couple of times I called, the agents are good. Try both of these things. CPC call number is on income tax portal. Read different numbers and choose one that specifically is listed for IT notices.

It is possible that the letter was sent at the same time as the compliance notification portal or that they are 2 independent notifications for the same issue. Not everyone opens their income tax portal, so maybe they send letters also.

Just respond to the letter also separately.

Btw, are you staying in India? What address did they send the letter to?

Thanks all for the replies. Very helpful!

The letter was sent to my USA address (which IT dept have from my PAN card). The letter was dated in April (around the time of the email notification which I responded to) and was delivered to me at the end of June.
